Proverbs 19:14

House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD. HOUSE AND RICHES (ARE) THE INHERITANCE OF FATHERS - i:e., are to be obtained by inheritance from them. They are among the indiscriminate gifts of God's bounty, common to the good and bad alike. BUT A PRUDENT WIFE (I:E., ONE OF GODLY INTELLIGENCE, PLEASING DISPOSITION, AND SOUND WISDOM IN MANAGING HER HOUSEHOLD) IS FROM THE LORD. "House and riches" are also from the Lord, but indirectly. A good wife is God's special and immediate gift; it is more rare and less attainable by mere human sagacity. God alone knows what a wife will prove to be. Men often mistake. Let parents seek for their sons a wife of piety and goodness, rather than large wealth: as on her character depends the well-being of the husband, the children, and the household. Prayer to the Lord is the way of obtaining such a wife....

Verse Proverbs 19:14. _A PRUDENT WIFE_ IS _FROM THE LORD._] One who has a good understanding, אשה משכלת _ishshah mascaleth_; who avoids complaining, though she may often have cause for it....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 19:1 BETTER IS THE POOR THAT WALKTH IN HIS INTEGRITY. The word for "poor" is, here and in Proverbs 19:7, Proverbs 19:22, _rash, _which signifies "poor" in opposition to "rich." In the present reading of the second clause, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool, there seems to be a failure in antithesis, unless we can understand the fool as a rich fool. This, the repetition of the maxim in Proverbs 28:6 ("Than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich"), would lead one to admit. The Vulgate accordingly has, Quam dives torquem

HOUSES AND RICHES [ARE] THE INHERITANCE OF FATHERS,.... Which they are careful to provide and leave to their children. This they may and often do, build or purchase houses, and procure great riches, and put their children into the possession of them; AND, or but, A PRUDENT WIFE [IS] FROM THE LORD; one that behaves well to her husband, massages the affairs of her house with wisdom, and brings up her children in all orderly manner: such a wife no man has from the care and provision of his parents; nor so much from his own good choice and industry as from the kind providence of God, to which he should ascribe it; his parents may give him houses and lands, but it is God that gives him a wise and discreet woman to be an helpmeet to him; see Proverbs 18:22....

CHAPTER 19:1-19 FURTHER PROVERBS ON PERSONAL INSTRUCTION One may be poor, but walking in integrity, he is far ahead of him who is perverse in his lips and is a fool. Then we find proverbs about fretting against the Lord; warning against false witness and speaking lies and other matters. We call special attention to Proverbs 19:12 . _ The King's wrath is as the roaring of a lion._ But his favour is as dew upon the grass. It may be applied to Him who is The Lamb of God and also the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Some day He will roar in His displeasure and manifest the wrath, so well deserved by the world. But even then His grace will be revealed, for in wrath He will remember mercy, the mercy promised to Israel. “I will be as the dew unto Israel; he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth its roots as Lebanon”...

PROVERBS 19. A shrewd turn of sarcasm in Proverbs 19:3 suggests the attitude of practical wisdom towards that questioning of the moral government of the world which we find in Job. PROVERBS 19:1. FOOL: read rich, as in Proverbs 28:6. Proverbs 19:2 a. Both RV and RVm are unsound grammatically. The lit. rendering shows that the clause is defective, Also without knowledge of the soul. is not good. Some verb expressing action is required. Proverbs 19:2 b. sinneth: read _mg._ The idea is more haste less speed.

_the inheritance of_ Rather, AN INHERITANCE FROM (R.V.); i.e. derived from. _And_ Rather, BUT. οἶκον καὶ ὕπαρξιν μερίζουσι πατέρες παισὶ, παρὰ δὲ κυρίου ἁρμόζεται γυνὴ ἀνδρί, LXX. Domus et divitiæ dantur a parentibus; a Domino autem proprie uxor prudens, Vulg. Comp. Proverbs 18:22; Genesis 24:12-14....
