Verse Proverbs 19:18. _LET NOT THY SOUL SPARE FOR HIS CRYING._] This is a hard precept for a _parent_. Nothing affects the heart of a parent so much as a child's _cries_ and _tears_. But it is better that the _child_ may be caused to _cry_, when the correction may be healthful to his soul, than that the parent should _cry_ afterwards, when the child is grown to _man's_ estate, and his evil habits are _sealed for life_....

WHILE THERE IS HOPE - While he is still young, and capable of being reformed. CRYING - Better, as in the margin, Do not set thy soul on his destruction; words which either counsel forbearance in the act of chastisement (compare Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21); or urge that a false clemency is a real cruelty. The latter sense is preferable. The father is warned that to forbear from chastising is virtually to expose the son who needs it to a far worse penalty....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 19:1 BETTER IS THE POOR THAT WALKTH IN HIS INTEGRITY. The word for "poor" is, here and in Proverbs 19:7, Proverbs 19:22, _rash, _which signifies "poor" in opposition to "rich." In the present reading of the second clause, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool, there seems to be a failure in antithesis, unless we can understand the fool as a rich fool. This, the repetition of the maxim in Proverbs 28:6 ("Than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich"), would lead one to admit. The Vulgate accordingly has, Quam dives torquem

Of guiding and keeping him in the right way, as long as corrections are or can be hoped to be of use; while in a state of infancy, childhood, and youth; while under parental government; and before habits in sin are grown strong, and the case become desperate, and he is hardened, and proof against all instruction and discipline; AND LET NOT THY SOUL SPARE FOR HIS CRYING; the noise he makes, the tears he sheds, the entreaties he uses to keep off the rod; let not a foolish pity and tenderness prevail to lay it aside on that account the consequence of which may be bad to parent and child; see Proverbs 13:24. CHAPTER 19:1-19 FURTHER PROVERBS ON PERSONAL INSTRUCTION One may be poor, but walking in integrity, he is far ahead of him who is perverse in his lips and is a fool. Then we find proverbs about fretting against the Lord; warning against false witness and speaking lies and other matters. We call special attention to Proverbs 19:12 . _ The King's wrath is as the roaring of a lion._ But his favour is as dew upon the grass. It may be applied to Him who is The Lamb of God and also the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Some day He will roar in His displeasure and manifest the wrath, so well deserved by the world. But even then His grace will be revealed, for in wrath He will remember mercy, the mercy promised to Israel. “I will be as the dew unto Israel; he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth its roots as Lebanon”...

PROVERBS 19. A shrewd turn of sarcasm in Proverbs 19:3 suggests the attitude of practical wisdom towards that questioning of the moral government of the world which we find in Job. PROVERBS 19:1. FOOL: read rich, as in Proverbs 28:6. Proverbs 19:2 a. Both RV and RVm are unsound grammatically. The lit. rendering shows that the clause is defective, Also without knowledge of the soul. is not good. Some verb expressing action is required. Proverbs 19:2 b. sinneth: read _mg._ The idea is more haste less speed.

CHASTEN. Correct, or discipline. LET NOT, &C. This is not. caution against excess of severity, but against. cruel kindness which ends in death, by withholding seasonable correction....

_while_ R.V. _seeing:_i.e. for if done now it will not be too late. _let not thy soul spare for his crying_ Rather, SET NOT THY HEART ON HIS DESTRUCTION, R.V.; lit. ON CAUSING HIM TO DIE. This might mean, let not thy passionate and excessive correction kill or injure him; as LXX., Vulg. and Maurer (sed cave occidas inter castigandum), and Coverdale, "but let not thy soul be moved to slay him"; but it is better to understand it of the result of withholding correction: be not bent by thy foolish indulgence on ruining him. So A.V. marg., "Let not thy soul spare to his destruction, or to cause him to die." Comp. 1 Kings 2:6; and Sir 30:1....

AND LET NOT, &C.— _But suffer not thyself to be transported to cause him to die._ The LXX read, _Chasten thy son, so shall he be hopeful; but be not raised in thy wrath to the provocation of him._ See Colossians 3:21....
