Proverbs 3:19

The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. THE LORD BY WISDOM HATH FOUNDED THE EARTH; BY UNDERSTANDING HATH HE ESTABLISHED THE HEAVENS. 'Do not marvel at my having said that wisdom secures all these blessings length of years, riches, etc.; because it has effected far greater things than these. It was by it, as one of His divine attributes, that God hath founded the earth and the heavens' (Cornelius a Lapide)....

13-20 No precious jewels or earthly treasures are worthy to be compared with true wisdom, whether the concerns of time or eternity be considered. We must make wisdom our business; we must venture all in it, and be willing to part with all for it. This Wisdom is the Lord Jesus Christ and his salvation, sought and obtained by faith and prayer. Were it not for unbelief, remaining sinfulness, and carelessness, we should find all our ways pleasantness, and our paths peace, for his are so; but we too often step aside from them, to our own hurt and grief. Christ is that Wisdom, by whom the worlds were made, and still are in being; happy are those to whom he is made of God wisdom. He has wherewithal to make good all his promises....

Verse Proverbs 3:19. _THE LORD BY WISDOM HATH FOUNDED THE EARTH_] Here wisdom is taken in its proper acceptation, for that infinite knowledge and skill which God has manifested in the creation and composition of the earth, and in the structure and economy of the heavens. He has established the _order_ as well as the _essence_ of all things; so that though they _vary_ in their _positions_, c., yet they never _change_ either their _places_, or their _properties_. _Composition_ and _analysis_ are not _essential changes_ the original _particles_, their _forms_ and _properties_, remain the same....

Hereto Wisdom has been thought of in relation to men. Now the question comes, What is she in relation to God? and the answer is, that the creative act implies a Divine Wisdom, through which the Divine will acts. This thought, developed in Proverbs 8, is the first link in the chain which connects this “Wisdom” with the Divine Word, the Logos of John’s Gospel. Compare Psalms 33:6; John 1:3. The words of the writer of the Proverbs take their place among the proofs of the dogmatic statements of the Nicene Creed....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 3:1 4. _Fourth admonitory discourse. _The third chapter introduces us to a group of admonitions, and the first of these (Proverbs 3:1) forms the fourth admonitory discourse of the teacher. To all intents and purposes this is a continuation of the discourse in the preceding chapter, for inasmuch as that described the benefits, spiritual and moral, which follow from the pursuit of Wisdom, in promoting godliness and providing safety from evil companions, so this in like manner depicts the gain flowing from Wisdom, the happiness of the man who finds Wisdom, and the favour which he meets with both with God and man. It is interesting to find _torah_ used in its earlier prophetic sense of oral instruction, without reference to its later sense of the whole body of legislation represented by the Pentateuch.
