Proverbs 3:21

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: MY SON, LET NOT THEM DEPART FROM THINE EYES: KEEP SOUND WISDOM AND DISCRETION. On these last words cf. ; , notes. Solomon repeats similar monitions so frequently (cf. Proverbs 1:8; ; ) on account of men's spiritual apathy, in order to impress them the more firmly with the greatness, certainty, and importance of these truths. Keep them before thine eyes as a perpetual object of delight and source of instruction....

21-26 Let us not suffer Christ's words to depart from us, but keep sound wisdom and discretion; then shall we walk safely in his ways. The natural life, and all that belongs to it, shall be under the protection of God's providence; the spiritual life, and all its interests, under the protection of his grace, so that we shall be kept from falling into sin or trouble....

Verse Proverbs 3:21. _LET NOT THEM DEPART FROM THINE EYES_] Never forget that God, who is the author of nature, directs and governs it in all things; for it is no self-determining agent. _KEEP SOUND WISDOM AND DISCRETION_] תושיה ומזמה _tushiyah_ _umezimmah_. We have met with both these words before. _Tushiyah_ is the _essence_ or _substance_ of a thing; _mezimmah_ is the _resolution_ or _purpose_ formed in reference to something good or excellent. To acknowledge God as the author of all good, is the _tushiyah_, the _essence_, of a godly man's creed; to _resolve_ to _act according_ to the directions of his wisdom, is the _mezimmah_, the _religious_ _purpose_, that will bring good to ourselves and glory to God. These bring _life to the soul_, and are _ornamental_ to the man

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 3:1 4. _Fourth admonitory discourse. _The third chapter introduces us to a group of admonitions, and the first of these (Proverbs 3:1) forms the fourth admonitory discourse of the teacher. To all intents and purposes this is a continuation of the discourse in the preceding chapter, for inasmuch as that described the benefits, spiritual and moral, which follow from the pursuit of Wisdom, in promoting godliness and providing safety from evil companions, so this in like manner depicts the gain flowing from Wisdom, the happiness of the man who finds Wisdom, and the favour which he meets with both with God and man. MY SON, LET NOT THEM DEPART FROM THINE EYES,.... Meaning not the things done by Wisdom; though it is good to contemplate his works of creation and providence, which serve to set forth the glory of Christ, and lead into adoring and admiring views of him, and to thankfulness to him; but wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, whereby these things are done, which are but so many names of Christ: we should always set him before us, keep him always in view, be ever looking to him by faith, and never suffer him to depart from our eyes; we should always have in sight his divine Person for our acceptance with God, the greatness and glory of it to encourage our faith and hope in him; we should keep in view his righteousness for our justification, and which we should ever make mention of at the throne of grace, and hold it forth in the hand of faith against all charges and accusations of law and jus...

FOURTH Discourse. The sage exhorts the young man to heed his oral instruction (_torah),_ and to trust in Yahweh, fear Him, and honour Him in the prescribed manner of firstfruits. It is interesting to find _torah_ used in its earlier prophetic sense of oral instruction, without reference to its later sense of the whole body of legislation represented by the Pentateuch. The torah of the wise man represents not his own individual authority, but the accumulated wisdom of experience. The torah of the prophet, although delivered in the name of Yahweh, represents ultimately the accumulated moral consciousness of the nation; while the torah of the priest in its later form at least represents the traditional and inherited ritual, the prescribed method of the cultus. Sixth Address. Chap. 3. Proverbs 3:21 21. _let not them_ The reference may be to the "sound wisdom and discretion" of the following clause; but it is better perhaps to understand by "them" the precepts already given.
