Psalms 109:7

When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. WHEN HE SHALL BE JUDGED, LET HIM BE CONDEMNED - literally, 'let him go forth (from the trial pronounced) guilty,' even as he condemned me "without a cause" (). AND LET HIS PRAYER BECOME SIN - i:e., be imputed to him as sin. This is consonant to the Word and will of God. Prayer without faith and repentance is sin (; ; ; ). God punishes the wicked by the wicked. Even unjust decisions, in spite of the wicked opponents of God, are overruled to subserve His purposes....

7_When he is judged, let him depart guilty _Another imprecation is, that, being summoned to judgment, he might be punished without mercy, and that, though he humbly crave forgiveness, the judge should remain inexorable. This might with propriety be understood to relate not merely to his being judged at the bar of men, but also at the tribunal of God. But as it accords very well with the decisions awarded by an earthly judge, and as this is the commonly received interpretation, I have no wish to depart from it. There are two things which must be noticed here; that the wickedness of the wicked may be so palpable as to leave no room to escape from the execution of justice, and that all their entreaties for pardon may be disregarded. 6-20 The Lord Jesus may speak here as a Judge, denouncing sentence on some of his enemies, to warn others. When men reject the salvation of Christ, even their prayers are numbered among their sins. See what hurries some to shameful deaths, and brings the families and estates of others to ruin; makes them and theirs despicable and hateful, and brings poverty, shame, and misery upon their posterity: it is sin, that mischievous, destructive thing. And what will be the effect of the sentence, "Go, ye cursed," upon the bodies and souls of the wicked! How it will affect the senses of the body, and the powers of the soul, with pain, anguish, horror, and despair! Think on these things, sinners, tremble and repent....

Verse Psalms 109:7. _LET HIM BE CONDEMNED_] יצא רשע _yetse rasha_. "Let him come out a wicked man;" that is let his wickedness be made manifest. _LET HIS PRAYER BECOME SIN._] Thus paraphrased by Calmet: "Let him be accused, convicted, and condemned, and let the _defence_ which he brings for his justification only serve to deepen his guilt, and hasten his condemnation." I once more apprise the reader, that if these are not the words of _David's_ enemies against himself, (see on Psalms 109:20,) they are _prophetic denunciations_ against a rebellious and apostate person or people, hardened in crime, and refusing to return to God....

WHEN HE SHALL BE JUDGED ... - When for his offences he shall be arraigned. The psalmist supposes that he “might” be put on trial; he seems to suppose that this “would be.” Such wickedness could not always escape detection, and sooner or later he would be arrested and brought to trial. “When” this should occur, the psalmist prays that justice might be done; that he might be condemned, as he “ought” to be. Such a prayer could not in itself be wrong, for assuredly it cannot be proper for magistrates to pray that the wicked man may escape, or that they may themselves fail in the very object for which they are appointed. EXPOSITION THE title of this psalm—"To the chief musician, a psalm of David"—is thought to be not inappropriate. We may have here David's own appeal to God against his persecutors, and especially against a chief persecutor, who may be Saul, or Doeg, or Ahithophel, or Shimei. The psalm opens with mingled complaint and prayer. The adversaries are spoken of in the plural (Psalms 109:2). They have abused and maligned the writer, have returned evil for the good that he has sought to do them, and given him hatred for his love (Psalms 109:5). The psalmist, in return, utters against them, or rather against his chief persecutor, a series of male dictions (Psalms 109:6) which constitute a stand

CIX. A PSALM OF CURSING. This Ps. is further than anything else in the whole Psalter from the spirit of Christianity. It falls into three parts: Psalms 109:1. The Psalmist's distress in persecution; Psalms 109:6. Bitter curses against his foes; in Psalms 109:21 he recurs to his suffering but is confident of final deliverance. Note that in Psalms 109:6 he does not merely assert that God will punish. Had he done so, he would have felt his pain of body and soul much softened. As it is, he is in utter wretchedness, and curses his foes in the anguish of his spirit. No doubt he regards his enemies as utterly wicked. But we do not
