Psalms 147:13

Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion. PRAISE THE LORD, O JERUSALEM. FOR HE HATH STRENGTHENED THE BARS OF THY GATES. The walls of Jerusalem had just been built, and the gates set up, under Nehemiah. This was the crowning of the secure re-establishment of the city and nation. This cycle of psalm was sung at the dedication of the walls (Nehemiah 3:1; ). Compare Sir 49:13 , which seems to have had this passage in view, 'Nehemas, whose renown is great, who raised up for us the walls that were fallen down, and set up the gates and the bars, and raised up our ruins again.' HE HATH BLESSED THY CHILDREN WITHIN THEE. Internal prosperity follows external security, which the building of the walls and setting up of the gates ensured....

12-20 The church, like Jerusalem of old, built up and preserved by the wisdom, power, and goodness of God, is exhorted to praise him for all the benefits and blessings vouchsafed to her; and these are represented by his favours in the course of nature. The thawing word may represent the gospel of Christ, and the thawing wind the Spirit of Christ; for the Spirit is compared to the wind, John 3:8. Converting grace softens the heart that was hard frozen, and melts it into tears of repentance, and makes good reflections to flow, which before were chilled and stopped up. The change which the thaw makes is very evident, yet how it is done no one can say. Such is the change wrought in the conversion of a soul, when God's word and Spirit are sent to melt it and restore it to itself...

Verse Psalms 147:13. _HE HATH STRENGTHENED THE BARS OF THY GATES_] He has enabled thee to complete the _walls of Jerusalem_. From the former part of the Psalm it appears the _walls were then in progress_; from this part, they appear to be _completed_, and provisions to be brought into the city, to support its inhabitants. The _gates_ were set up and well secured by _bars_, so that the grain, c., was in safety....

FOR HE HATH STRENGTHENED THE BARS OF THY GATES - He has made thee safe and secure - as if he had given additional strength to the fastenings of the gates of the city. Cities were surrounded by walls. They were entered through gates. Those gates were fastened by bars passed across them, to which the gates were secured. The language here might be applicable to any period, but it is probable that there is particular reference to Jerusalem as made strong in rebuilding it after the return from Babylon. HE HATH BLESSED THY CHILDREN WITHIN THEE - The inhabitants, by giving them safety and peace....

EXPOSITION This psalm is generally assigned to the time of the dedication of the city wall (Nehemiah 12:27-16), when the gate-towers had been set up, and the gates and bars put in their places (see Psalms 147:13; and comp. Nehemiah 7:1). It is, more manifestly than any of the others, a Return joy-song (Psalms 147:2, Psalms 147:12). FOR HE HATH STRENGTHENED THE BARS OF THY GATES,.... Of Jerusalem, of Zion the church of God. Gates are for the letting in of persons into the city of our God; which are Christ, faith in him, and a profession of it; see Isaiah 26:1, "bars" are for the security of those that, are in it, and to keep out the enemy: and these, "strengthened", denote the utmost safety of the true members of Christ and his church; who have nothing to fear from their spiritual enemies, sin, law, Satan, the world, death, and hell: God is on their side; Christ is the munition of rocks unto them the Holy Spirit is in them, who is greater than he that is in the world; and angels are guards about them; all which is matter of praise, and a sufficient reason for it; HE HATH BLESSED THY CHILDREN WITHIN THEE; multiplied them and made them fruitful, increased the number of them; even the spiritual children of

This is one of the Hallelujah Psalms; it begins and ends with «Praise ye the LORD.» May our hearts be in tune, that we may praise the Lord while we read these words of praise! PSALM 144-150 THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS The five Psalms with which this marvellous book closeth are all Psalms of praise. The word “praise” is found in the Hebrew thirty-seven times. CXLVII. The LXX, perhaps rightly, divides the Ps. into two, Psalms 147:1 and Psalms 147:12. PSALMS 147:1. An invitation to praise Yahweh for His almighty power and His kindness to Israel.
