Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp. LET THEM PRAISE HIS NAME IN THE DANCE. So the Septuagint, Chaldaic, Arabic, Vulgate, Ethiopic. Gejer, etc., take it as margin, 'with the pipe.' The Hebrew admits of either translation here and . I prefer the English version. 1-5 New mercies continually demand new songs of praise, upon earth and in heaven. And the children of Zion have not only to bless the God who made them, but to rejoice in him, as having created them in Christ Jesus unto good works, and formed them saints as well as men. Verse Psalms 149:3. _LET THEM PRAISE HIS NAME IN THE DANCE_] במחול _bemachol,_ _with the pipe_, or some kind of _wind music_, classed here with תף _toph_, the _tabor_ or _drum_, and כנור _kinnor_, the _harp_. " מחול machol," says _Parkhurst_, "_some fistular wind-instrument_ _of music, with holes_, as _a flute, pipe_, or _fife_, from חל _chal, to make a hole or opening_." I know no place in the Bible where מחול _machol_ and מחלת _machalath_ mean _dance_ of any kind; they constantly signify some kind of _pipe_....

The Hebrew word here - מחול _mâchôl_ - is rendered dancing in Psalms 30:11; dance, as here, Psalms 150:4 (where also the margin has pipe); Jeremiah 31:13; Lamentations 5:15; dances, Jeremiah 31:4. EXPOSITION A "Hallelujah Psalm," combining the praise of God for mercies already received with anticipations of future vengeance, through God's help, on heathen enemies that are still bent on persecuting God's "loving ones." The tone is that of Psalms 109:1; though the expressions used are less fierce. The whole Book of Psalms is full of praise, but the praise culminates at the close. There are five «Hallelujah Psalms» at the end of the Book; they are so named because they both begin and conclude with the word Hallelujah, «Praise ye the Lord.» It must be to the intense regret of all reverent persons to find the word Hallelujah so used today, in a hackneyed way, that it is made to be a commonplace instead of a very sacred word,-Hallelujah, or, Praise be unto Jah, Jehovah. CXLIX. A SONG OF TRIUMPH AND MESSIANIC EXPECTATION. Obviously this Ps. depicts a stage in the Maccabean war. It is addressed to the assembly of the saints, the Hasidim of Psalms 4:3. The heroes whom the Ps. celebrates are meek (Psalms 149:4) towards God, but they fight fiercely.
