_THE LORD LIVETH; AND BLESSED BE MY ROCK; AND LET THE GOD OF MY SALVATION BE EXALTED._ Closing recapitulation of the whole subject.- Verse 46. THE LORD LIVETH; AND BLESSED BE MY ROCK; AND LET THE GOD OF MY SALVATION BE EXALTED. The threefold blessing answers to that in Numbers 6:24: an intimation of the Trinity. With "the Lord liveth," cf. 1 Timothy 6:16, "who only hath immortality" - a tacit contrast to the dead idols, which afford no safety to their votaries. 50._He worketh great deliverances, etc _This concluding verse clearly shows why God had exercised such goodness and liberality towards David, namely, because he had anointed him to be king. By calling himself _God’s king, _David testifies that he had not rashly rushed into that office, nor was thrust into it by conspiracies and wicked intrigues, but, on the contrary, reigned by lawful right, inasmuch as it was the will of God that he should be king. This he proves by the ceremony of anointing; for God, in anointing him by the hand of Samuel, had asserted his right to reign not less than if he had visibly stretched forth his hand from heaven to place and establish him on the royal throne. 29-50 When we praise for one mercy, we must observe the many more, with which we have been compassed all our days. Many things had contributed to David's advancement, and he owns the hand of God in them all, to teach us to do likewise. Verse Psalms 18:50. _GREAT DELIVERANCE GIVETH HE TO HIS KING_] David was a king of God's appointment, and was peculiarly favoured by him. Literally, _He is magnifying the salvations of his king_. He not only delivers, but follows up those deliverances with innumerable blessings. _SHOWETH MERCY - TO DAVID_] I have no _claim_ upon his bounty. I _deserve_ nothing from him, but he continues to show _mercy_. _TO HIS SEED_] His _posterity_. So the words זרע _zera_ and σπερμα, in the Old and New Testament, should be universally translated. GREAT DELIVERANCE GIVETH HE TO HIS KING - To David, as king. The word in the original, which is rendered “deliverance,” means properly salvations, and is here in the plural number. It refers not to one act of divine interposition, but to the many acts (referred to in the psalm) in which God had interposed to save him from danger and from death. The phrase “to his king” refers to the fact that God had appointed him to reign, and to administer the government for him. He did not reign on his own account, but he reigned for God, and with a view to do his will. EXPOSITION THIS psalm has many characteristics which distinguish it, not only from all that have preceded it in the collection, but from all those which are assigned to David by their titles. In the first pace, it is the longest of such psalms, extending, as it does, to fifty distinguish it, not only from all that have verses, or a hundred and fourteen lines, but from all Hebrew poetry. Next, it is continuous, not broken into strophes (Hengstenberg). Thirdly, it appears, not only in the Psalter, but also in one of the historical books the Second Book of Samuel, in what seems to be a second edition. Further, it is in itself a very remarkable composition, being distinguished alike by "vigour and grace; full of archaic grandeur, and yet free from abrupt transitions and thoughts labouring for utterance, such as make some of the earlier psalms difficult to understand" ('Speaker's Commentary')...

Not that is king over him; for he is King of kings and Lord of lords; but that is made king by him, as David was; who did not usurp the throne, but was anointed king by the appointment of God, and was placed by him upon the throne; to whom he gave great deliverance from his enemies, or "magnified salvations" to him; which were great in kind, and many in number; and as Christ is, whom God has set as his King on his holy hill of Sion, against whom the Heathen raged, and kings and princes set themselves; but he is delivered from them all, and saved from the power of death and the grave, and ever lives to reign over, protect, and defend his people; in 2 Samuel 22:51, it is, he is "the tower of salvation for his king", with which compare Proverbs 18:10;...

Even scholars who hold traditional views admit that he cannot have written it as it stands, and that additional matter has been interpolated by later scribes. The language, which is Aramaic in its colouring, confirms the view that it is late, and so does the theophany in Psalms 18:3 when compared with Deuteronomy 32. Possibly a later writer composed it and put it by a very permissible license in David's mouth. If so, he paints David not as he was, but as a later age conceived him to be, a warrior on the one hand, a strict observer of the Law upon the other. The portrait would then agree with that given in Chronicles.
