His emaciation through long watchings and sufferings, caused His naked body on the cross to have the bones so protruding as to be visible alike to Himself and to His insulting enemies. The details as too minutely descriptive of Messiah, to admit of Hengstenberg's view, that the whole psalm was primarily written concerning the ideal of a righteous sufferer, and only secondarily of Christ....

Verse Psalms 22:17. _I MAY TELL ALL MY BONES_] This may refer to the violent _extension_ of his body when the whole of its weight hung upon the nails which attached his hands to the transverse beam of the cross. The body being thus extended, the principal bones became prominent, and easily discernible....

I MAY TELL ALL MY BONES - That is, I may count them. They are so prominent, so bare, that I can see them and count their number. The idea here is that of emaciation from continued suffering or from some other cause. As applied to the Redeemer, it would denote the effect of long protracted suffering and anxiety on his frame, as rendering it crushed, weakened, emaciated. Compare the notes at Isaiah 52:14; Isaiah 53:2. No one can prove that an effect such as is here referred to may not have been produced by the sufferings of the Redeemer. The most obvious construction would refer it to the former - to his bones - as if they stood out prominently

Admitted to be Messianic by the early Hebrew commentators, it is by some understood wholly of David; by others, applied to the Israelite people, or to the pious part of it; by others again, regarded as an ideal representation of the sufferings of the righteous man, and the effects of them; and by one or two eccentric critics, explained as referring to Hezekiah or Jeremiah. In Psalms 22:1 a godly man in deep and manifold distress complains that the God of his fathers, the God who has been with him from the beginning, has deserted him (see p. 372).
