On the contrary, the truly pious and pure in heart resort to them, not for the sake of vain ostentation, but as they are sincerely bent on seeking God, they willingly and affectionately employ the helps which he there affords them; and the advantage which they derive from them creates love to them in their hearts, and longings after them. And I have not been attentive to those duties, merely because they were _incumbent_ on me; but _I have loved_ _the place where thine honour dwelleth_; and my delight in thy ordinances has made my attendance as pleasant as it was profitable. This verse would be better translated, _Jehovah, I have_ _loved the habitation of thy house, and the place of the tabernacle_ _of thy glory_. EXPOSITION DAVID, about to sacrifice at God's altar, protests his integrity, but still prays for God's protection (Psalms 26:9) and for his redeeming mercy (Psalms 26:11). The psalm has all the notes of David's style, is full of his thoughts and imagery, and is allowed to be his by almost all critics. Meaning the tabernacle, for as yet the temple was not built; which was an habitation for the saints, where they chose to dwell, and reckoned it their happiness, and was the habitation of the Lord himself: the sanctuary was built for that purpose; and between the cherubim, over the mercy seat, he took up his residence; hence it follows, AND THE PLACE WHERE THINE HONOUR DWELLETH: or "glory" a: when the tabernacle was set up, the glory of the Lord filled it, as it did the temple, when it was dedicated, Exodus 40:35. No doubt this Psalm was written by David when his cruel persecutor Saul, the more effectually to stab at him, spread false reports concerning his character. When the wicked can use no other weapons, they always have their quivers full of slanderous reports. Let us learn here that the best of men must expect to be misrepresented, and to have the worst of crimes laid to their charge. Let us learn, also, from the example of David, to carry our case to the highest court at once, not to meddle with the lower courts of earth, but to go at once to the Court of King's Bench in heaven, and there plead our cause before the eternal throne.
