Psalms 43:3

_O SEND OUT THY LIGHT AND THY TRUTH: LET THEM LEAD ME; LET THEM BRING ME UNTO THY HOLY HILL, AND TO THY TABERNACLES._ O SEND OUT THY LIGHT - thy favour, dispelling my sadness (Psalms 27:1; Psalms 36:9; Psalms 57:3, end; Exodus 15:13). THY TRUTH - thy faithfulness in fulfilling thy promises. LET THEM BRING ME UNTO THY HOLY HILL, AND TO THY TABERNACLES - or 'dwellings'-namely, the "curtains" within which the ark of Yahweh "dwelt" at this time on "the holy hill" of Zion (2 Samuel 7:2)....

Verse Psalms 43:3. _O SEND OUT THY LIGHT AND THY TRUTH_] We are in _darkness_ and _distress_, O send _light_ and _prosperity_; we look for the fulfilment of thy _promises_, O send forth thy _truth_. Let thy _light_ guide me to thy _holy hill_, to the country of my fathers; let thy _truth_ lead me to thy tabernacles, there to worship thee in _spirit_ and in _truth_....

O SEND OUT THY LIGHT AND THY TRUTH - Send them forth as from thy presence; or, let them be made manifest. The word light here is equivalent to favor or mercy, as when one prays for the “light of God’s countenance” (see the notes at Psalms 4:6); and the idea is, that now, in the time of darkness and trouble, when the light of God’s countenance seemed to be withdrawn or hidden, he prays that God would impart light; that he would restore his favor; that he would conduct him back again to his former privileges. The word truth here is equivalent to truthfulness or faithfulness; and the prayer is, that God would manifest his faithfulness to him as one of his own people, by restoring him to the privileges and blessings from which he had been unjustly driven. EXPOSITION THE close connection of this psalm with the preceding has been already noticed (see the introduction to Psalms 42:1.). We must not, however, suppose an accidental detachment. Rather Psalms 43:1, is a supplementary stanza, added subsequently by the same or a different writer. Being intended as a continuation, the psalm has naturally no title. By light is meant, not the law, as Arama; but rather, as some Jewish p interpreters understand it, the Messiah, the sun of righteousness, and light of the world; who is the author of all light, natural, spiritual, and eternal; and whose coming into the world is often signified by being sent into it. The Spirit of God also is the enlightener of men, both at first conversion and afterwards, and is sent down into their hearts as a comforter of them, by being the Spirit of adoption. The Gospel of Christ is a great and glorious light, which, with the Holy Ghost, is sent down from heaven; though perhaps here rather may be meant the light of God's countenance, the discoveries of his favour and lovingkindness, which produce light, life, joy, peace, and comfort: and by "truth" may be meant, either Christ himself, who is the truth; or the Gospel the word of...

Psalms 43:1. _Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. For thou art the God of my strength:_ In the previous Psalm, David had called the Lord the God of his life. Now he calls him the God of his strength. We generally sing ourselves up. We may begin in a very low key, as David did, but if we can praise God in the dark, we shall soon praise God in the light. Psalms 43 The Cry Against the Ungodly Nation and Antichrist _ 1. The cry to God (Psalms 43:1)_ 2. Hopeful prayer for restoration to the Temple. It is impossible to say who are meant by the ungodly nation, the nation that is not _hasid_ (see Psalms 43*) or pious. Following this clue we might understand by the nation that is not pious, the mass of careless or apostate Jews, since nobody would expect zealous piety from heathen. But it is doubtful if _goi._ the word translated nation, could mean here a party in a nation. Besides, _hasid_ may be used in a more general sense, viz. merciful. PSALMS 43:3. The light is that of God's countenance, His favour: His truth is His faithfulness. They are here personified. The plural form tabernacles refers to the Temple with its various rooms and courts. LIGHT... TRUTH. Probably an allusion to the Urim and Thummim (see notes on Exodus 28:30), from which the Psalmist was now absent, in flight from Absalom. LEAD. gently lead, or comfort.
