_INSTEAD OF THY FATHERS SHALL BE THY CHILDREN, WHOM THOU MAYEST MAKE PRINCES IN ALL THE EARTH._ Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth. A princely and spiritual progeny shall be the fruit of this spiritual union (Isaiah 49:20; Isaiah 54:1). The allusion is to the custom of wishing to a newly-married pair a numerous and mighty offspring (Genesis 24:60; Ruth 4:11). The distinguished forefathers, David and Solomon, shall be eclipsed by their more glorious sons (Isaiah 60:17). The "children" are

16_Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children _This also serves to show the glory and transcendent excellence of this kingdom, namely, that the children will not be inferior in dignity to their fathers, and that the nobility of the race will not be diminished after the death of Solomon; for the children which shall be born to him will equal those who had preceded them in the most excellent virtues. Then it is added, that they shall be _princes in all the earth, _because the empire shall enjoy such an extent of dominion on every side, that it might easily be divided into many kingdoms. Verse Psalms 45:16. _INSTEAD OF THY FATHERS SHALT BE THY CHILDREN_] This is the _third_ part, or prophetic declaration relative to the numerous and powerful issue of this marriage. Instead of the kindred, which thou hast left behind in Egypt, thou shalt have numerous children. INSTEAD OF THY FATHERS SHALL BE THY CHILDREN - Instead of thy fame - thy celebrity - thy distinction - being derived from thine illustrious predecessors, it will be derived hereafter rather from thy sons; from the fact that they will be made princes and rulers in the earth. In our translation, this would seem to be an address to the bridal-queen, as if to console her for leaving the home of her illustrious ancestors, by the assurance that she would have children of her own, who would be still more illustrious. EXPOSITION THIS psalm is regarded by some as a simple epithalamium, or nuptial hymn, composed to honour a royal wedding, and sung as part of the wedding ceremony, at the marriage of some king of Israel or Judah. This Ps. owes its place in the Canon to that allegorical interpretation which has been accepted by the Synagogue and the Church, the Messiah being the bridegroom and Israel the bride. The friends of the bride are the convert nations who bring tributary gifts. But any such theory is untenable, (_a_) The friends of the bride in Psalms 45:14 are clearly distinguished from the nations in Psalms 45:12.
