_FOR THE LORD MOST HIGH IS TERRIBLE; HE IS A GREAT KING OVER ALL THE EARTH._ For the Lord most high is terrible - the ground of exultation, namely, Yahweh's interposition for His people with terrible judgments on their enemies (Psalms 68:35). HE IS A GREAT KING OVER ALL THE EARTH. The destruction of Israel's last foes shall be the preliminary to His manifestation as "King over all the earth." Every previous triumph of God's people is an earnest of the final one....

Since, then, no servitude is happy and desirable but that by which God subdues and brings under the standard and authority of Christ his Son those who before were rebels, it follows that this language is applicable only to the kingdom of Christ, who is called _a high and terrible King, _(verse 2;) not that he makes the wretched beings over whom he reigns to tremble by the tyranny and violence of his sway, but because his majesty, which before had been held in contempt, will suffice to quell the rebellion of the whole world. FOR THE LORD MOST HIGH - Yahweh, the Most High God; that is, who is exalted above all other beings. Compare Exodus 18:11; 1 Chronicles 16:25 Psa 96:4; 2 Chronicles 2:5; Psalms 95:3. IS TERRIBLE - literally, is to be feared; that is, reverenced and adored. There is an idea in the words “terrible” and “terror” which is not contained in the original, as if there were something harsh, severe, stern, in his character. EXPOSITION THIS is a song of praise to God, as the King of the whole earth. It has been called "one of the _accession _psalms," because it depicts God as assuming his kingdom, and taking his seat upon his throne (Psalms 47:5). There is nothing in the psalm that very definitely marks the time of the composition; but it may well be, as Dr. Kay suggests, a psalm in which "Israel collectively acknowledges what David had been allowed to accomplish." XLVII. JOY OF ALL MANKIND IN YAHWEH. All nations are invited to rejoice in Yahweh's exaltation. It seems strange that they should be expected to rejoice in their own defeat; but this is explained by the belief (Psalms 47:9) that the heathen nobles are to be gathered together with the people of the God of Abraham. In other words, they are to share in the promise made to Abraham (Genesis 12:3), In thee shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. The Ps. is sung in the synagogues on the Feast of Trumpets (p. 104, the Jewish New Year's Day. This ritual use may have been suggested by Psalms 47:5, or on the other hand, the Ps. may have been composed for liturgical use....
