8._He hath obtained the kingdom over the heathen _Literally it is, _He hath reigned; _but as the verb מלך, _malach, _is in the past tense, which in Hebrew denotes a continued act, we have translated it, _He hath obtained the kingdom _The prophet repeatedly informs us that God reigns over the Gentiles; and from this it is easy to gather that he here treats of a new and a previously unheard of manner of reigning. There is an implied contrast between the time of the Law, when God confined his empire, or kingdom, within the boundaries of Judea, and the coming of Christ, when he extended it far and wide, so as to occupy the whole world from one end to the other. The majesty of God sent forth some sparks of its brightness among the heathen nations, when David made them tributary; but the prophet could not, on that account, have properly said that God reigned among them, since they both contemn...

5-9 Praise is a duty in which we ought to be frequent and abundant. But here is a needful rule; Sing ye praises with understanding. As those that understand why and for what reasons they praise God, and what is the meaning of the service. It is not an acceptable service, if it is not a reasonable service. We are never to forget the end of Messiah's exaltation, so continually do the prophets dwell upon the conversion of the nations to the gospel of Christ. Why do we vainly fancy that we belong to him, unless the Spirit reign in our hearts by faith? Lord, is it not thy glory and delight to give repentance to Israel and remission of sins, now that thou art exalted as a Prince and a Saviour? Set up thy kingdom in our hearts. Bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. And so sweetly constrain all the powers and faculties of the souls of thy redeemed, into holy love, fear,...

Verse Psalms 47:8. _GOD REIGNETH OVER THE HEATHEN_] Though this is literally true in God's universal dominion, yet _more_ is here meant. God _reigns over the heathen_ when, by the preaching of the Gospel, they are brought into the Church of Christ. _GOD SITTETH UPON THE THRONE OF HIS HOLINESS._] He is a holy God; he proclaims holiness. His laws are holy, he requires holiness, and his genuine people are all holy. The _throne of his holiness_ is the _heaven of heavens_; also the _temple_ at Jerusalem; and, lastly, the _hearts of the faithful_....

GOD REIGNETH OVER THE HEATHEN - Over the “nations;” not over the “heathen” in the sense in which that term is understood now. It does not mean that God reigns, or that he has set up his throne over the people that have not the true religion, but that he is exalted over the “nations” of the earth as such; or, that he has universal dominion. EXPOSITION THIS is a song of praise to God, as the King of the whole earth. It has been called "one of the _accession _psalms," because it depicts God as assuming his kingdom, and taking his seat upon his throne (Psalms 47:5). There is nothing in the psalm that very definitely marks the time of the composition; but it may well be, as Dr. Kay suggests, a psalm in which "Israel collectively acknowledges what David had been allowed to accomplish." The title assigns it to "the sons of Korah," who were among David's chief musicians. XLVII. JOY OF ALL MANKIND IN YAHWEH. All nations are invited to rejoice in Yahweh's exaltation. It seems strange that they should be expected to rejoice in their own defeat; but this is explained by the belief (Psalms 47:9) that the heathen nobles are to be gathered together with the people of the God of Abraham. In other words, they are to share in the promise made to Abraham (Genesis 12:3), In thee shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. The Ps. is sung in the synagogues on the Feast of Trumpets (p. 104, the Jewish New Year's Day. This ritual use may have been suggested by Psalms 47:5, or on the other hand, the Ps. may have been composed for liturgical use....
