Some think that the word _and, by _which this sentence is joined to the preceding, is put for but; as if David, comparing himself with the ungodly, declared and assured himself that God would be merciful to him, while he abhorred and would destroy the wicked. But I leave it to my readers to judge whether it does not suit the passage better to consider this verse as an inference from what goes before, which might be put in this form: ”O Lord, thou canst not bear with the wicked; when, therefore, I am saved out of their hands by thy power, I will come to present myself before thee in thy temple, to give thee thanks for the deliverance which thou hast vouchsafed to me.” If the former interpretation be preferred, then the prophet, by simply commending his own piety towards God, separates himself from the class of whom he spoke. Verse Psalms 5:7. _IN THE MULTITUDE OF THY MERCY_] David considered it an inexpressible privilege to be permitted to attend _public worship_; and he knew that it was only through the _multitude of God's mercy_ that he, or any man else, could enjoy such a privilege. :Title UPON NEHILOTH - The title of Psalms 4:1 is, “upon Neginoth.” As that refers to a musical instrument, so it is probable that this does, and that the idea here is that this psalm was intended particularly for the music-master that had special charge of this instrument, or who presided over those that played on it. Perhaps the idea is that this psalm was specially designed to be accompanied with this instrument. The word here, Nehiloth - נחילות _n__e__chı̂ylôth_, plural. נחילה _n__e__chı̂ylâh_, singular - is supposed by Gesenius, Lexicon, to denote a flute, or pipe, as being “perforated,” from חלל _châlal_, to bore.” The word occurs only in this place. Very various opinions have been entertained of its meaning.

EXPOSITION THIS psalm is assigned by some to the time of Manasseh, but contains nothing that is really opposed to the superscription—"A Psalm of David"—since, before the temple was built, the tabernacle was called "the temple" (Joshua 6:24; 1Sa 1:9; 1 Samuel 3:3; 2 Samuel 12:20). It is thoroughly "Davidic in style, concise, vigorous; with rapid transitions of thought and feeling" ('Speaker's Commentary'). With respect to the time in David's life whereto it should be assigned, there are no very distinct indications. Here David had been used to go in times past; and though he was now in a kind of exile from it, he was confident he should again enter into and determined so to do whenever he had an opportunity, and that in the following manner: IN THE MULTITUDE OF THY MERCY; grace or goodness.
