_CAST THY BURDEN UPON THE LORD, AND HE SHALL SUSTAIN THEE: HE SHALL NEVER SUFFER THE RIGHTEOUS TO BE MOVED._ The Psalmist's confidence in the Lord suggests the encouraging self-exhortation to cast his burden upon the Lord. His spiritual and higher nature addresses his lower and weaker nature (Psalms 27:14; Psalms 42:5; Psalms 42:11). The relation of this verse to Psalms 55:16 shows that "cast thy burden upon the Lord" is primarily addressed to himself; secondarily, it belongs to all God's children when in distress, as the Psalmist is their representative. 22_Cast thy giving upon Jehovah. _The Hebrew verb יהב, _yahab, _signifies _to give, _so that יהבע, _yehobcha, _according to the ordinary rules of grammar, should be rendered _thy giving, _or _thy gift. _(321) Most interpreters read _thy burden, _but they assign no reason for this rendering. The verb יהב, _yahab, _never denotes _to burden, _and there is no precedent which might justify us in supposing that the noun deduced from it can mean _a burden. _They have evidently felt themselves compelled to invent that meaning from the harshness and apparent absurdity of the stricter translation, _Cast thy gift upon Jehovah. _And I grant that the sentiment they would express is a pious one, that we ought to disburden ourselves before God of all the cares and trouble

What a glorious promise to a tempted and afflicted soul! God will carry both _thee_ and thy _load_. CAST THY BURDEN UPON THE LORD - This may be regarded as an address of the psalmist to himself, or to his own soul - an exhortation to himself to roll all his care upon the Lord, and to be calm. It is expressed, however, in so general language, that it may be applicable to all persons in similar circumstances. Compare Matthew 11:28; Philippians 4:6; 1 Peter 5:7. The Margin here is, “gift.” The “literal” rendering would be, “Cast upon Jehovah what he hath given (or laid upon) thee; that is, thy lot.” (Gesenius, Lexicon) The phrase, “he gives thee,” here means what he appoints for thee; what he allots to thee as thy portion; what, in the great distribution of things in his world, he has as

EXPOSITION THIS psalm has been assigned to Jeremiah by Hitzig, and by others to an unknown writer of the seventh century B.C. But no solid grounds have been shown for setting aside the traditionary evidence of the "title," which ascribes it to David. It is Davidic in its depth of feeling, in its abrupt transitions (verses 9, 15, 20), and in its reference to a faithless friend, who is the chief cause of the writer's sufferings (verses 12-14, 20, 21; comp. Psalms 41:9). The Davidic authorship is accepted by Hengstenberg, Dr. Kay, and Canon Cook. The probable date of the psalm is the time of Absalom's rebellion.
