_LET ALL MINE ENEMIES BE ASHAMED AND SORE VEXED: LET THEM RETURN AND BE ASHAMED SUDDENLY._ Let all ... - or, 'All mine enemies shall be ashamed, etc. But the Chaldaic, Vulgate, Arabic, Syriac, and Septuagint support the English version (Hengstenberg). SORE VEXED - literally, 'terrified;' as also in Psalms 6:2, to which he refers here. The terror is transferred, in righteous retribution, from David to those who had caused it, to him. LET THEM RETURN - or, 'they shall return.' In either translation he confidently anticipates this result from his prayer. They who were advancing to attack him suddenly, in terror, fall back and "return," because God, in answer to his prayer (Psalms 6:4), has returned to him. The return of Yahweh is the cause; their return from Him effect....

8-10 What a sudden change is here! Having made his request known to God, the psalmist is confident that his sorrow will be turned into joy. By the workings of God's grace upon his heart, he knew his prayer was accepted, and did not doubt but it would, in due time, be answered. His prayers will be accepted, coming up out of the hands of Christ the Mediator. The word signifies prayer made to God, the righteous Judge, as the God of his righteousness, who would plead his cause, and right his wrongs. A believer, through the blood and righteousness of Christ, can go to God as a righteous God, and plead with him for pardon and cleansing, who is just and faithful to grant both. Verse Psalms 6:10. _ASHAMED AND SORE VEXED_] May they as deeply deplore their transgressions as I have done mine! May _they return_; may they be _suddenly converted_! The wish is that they might be brought to see their own guilt - a wish certainly which it is right to cherish in regard to all evil-doers. AND SORE VEXED - Compare the notes at Psalms 5:10. The same Hebrew word is used here which occurs in Psalms 6:2, and rendered “vexed.” It is a word which denotes trouble, trembling, consternation; and the meaning here is, that the psalmist prayed that they might be confounded or disconcerted in their plans - a prayer which is certainly proper in regard to all the purposes of the wicked. EXPOSITION This is the first of what have been called "the Penitential Psalms." It has been said that "there is much of grief in it, but nothing of penitence." The grief, however—such grief (see verse 6)—can scarcely be supposed to have arisen from any other source than consciousness of sin. dud grief of this kind is a main element in penitence. The title ascribes the psalm to David, and declares it to be addressed, like Psalms 4:1; "to the Chief Musician on Neginoth," by which we are probably to understand that it is intended to be set to an accompaniment of stringed instruments (see introductory paragraph to Psalms 4:1.). Here the psalmist asks for a visit from God, for he is sick at heart, heavy and depressed. Be very thankful if that is not your case; but if it is, be very grateful that here is a prayer ready-made for you. Here you are taught how to cry to God, and what to expect from him.
