_THAT THY FOOT MAY BE DIPPED IN THE BLOOD OF THINE ENEMIES, AND THE TONGUE OF THY DOGS IN THE SAME._ That thy foot may be dipped - literally, that thou mayest dash about: the same Hebrew as in Psalms 68:21, "wound" or 'dash in pieces.' AND THE TONGUE OF THY DOGS IN THE SAME - i:e., may be dipped in the same; literally, 'that the tongue of thy dogs (may get) from thine enemies, from it.' Compare the case of Ahab's and Jezebel's blood licked up by dogs (1 Kings 22:38; 2 Kings 9:35)....

22-28 The victories with which God blessed David over the enemies of Israel, are types of Christ's victory, for himself and for all believers. Those who take him for theirs, may see him acting as their God, as their King, for their good, and in answer to their prayers; especially in and by his word and ordinances. The kingdom of the Messiah shall be submitted to by all the rulers and learned in the world. The people seem to address the king, ver. Psalms 68:28. But the words are applicable to the Redeemer, to his church, and every true believer. We pray, that thou, O God the Son, wilt complete thine undertaking for us, by finishing thy good work in us....

THAT THY FOOT MAY BE DIPPED IN THE BLOOD OF THINE ENEMIES ... - Margin, “red.” A more literal rendering would be, “That thou mayest crush - thy foot in blood - the tongue of thy dogs from the enemies, from him.” The idea of “dipping” the foot in blood is not in the passage directly; but the leading thought is that of “crushing” the enemy. It is then “added” that the foot would be in blood. So of the tongue of the dogs. The “meaning” is, that the tongues of dogs would be employed in licking up the blood of the enemies, though that is not “expressed” in so many words. The sense of the whole is, that the foes of the people would be slain....

EXPOSITION THIS psalm is one of triumphant praise and jubilation, the crown and gem of the Second Book. Professor Cheyne calls it "a patriotic and religious ode of wondrous range and compass, and in the grandest style." He also notes that it was a favourite with the Huguenots, who called it "The Song of Battles," and that it was chanted by Savanarola and his brother monks as they marched to the trial of fire in the Piazza of Florence. While some critics assign it to the post-Captivity period (Ewald, Cheyne), the greater number, and the most acute (Botticher, Hitzig, Hengstenberg, Kay, Dean Johnson, etc.)see in it one of the earliest, as well as the most beautiful, specimens of Hebrew poetry. This was a Psalm sung, at the removing of the ark, when it was taken up to its resting-place on Mount Zion. All the tribes were gathered together, and, in full pomp, they marched along, bearing the sacred chest. As they tramped forward, the trumpets sounded, and this Psalm rose up to God. Psalms 68:1. _Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him._ That is the way to move, God first, and his people following closely after him.
