18._Blessed be Jehovah God! the God of Israel. _(147) David, after having prayed for prosperity to his successors, breaks forth in praising God, because he was assured by the divine oracle that his prayers would not be in vain. Had he not with the eyes of faith beheld those things which we have seen above, his rejoicing would have been less free and lively. When he says that _God alone doeth wonderful things, _this, no doubt, is spoken in reference to the subject of which he is presently treating, with the view not only of commending the excellence of the kingdom, but also to admonish himself and others of the need which there is that God should display his wonderful and stupendous power for its preservation. 18-20 We are taught to bless God in Christ, for all he has done for us by him. David is earnest in prayer for the fulfilment of this prophecy and promise. It is sad to think how empty the earth is of the glory of God, how little service and honour he has from a world to which he is so bountiful. May we, like David, submit to Christ's authority, and partake of his righteousness and peace. May we bless him for the wonders of redeeming love. Verse Psalms 72:18. _BLESSED_ BE _THE LORD GOD_] David foresaw all Solomon's _grandeur_; his _justice, equity_, and the _happiness_ of the _subjects_ under his government; and his soul has, in consequence, sensations of pleasure and gratitude to God, which even his own wondrous pen cannot describe. But it is worthy of remark, that God did not reveal to him the _apostasy_ of this beloved son. He did not foresee that this once holy, happy, wise, and prosperous man would be the means of debasing the Divine worship, and establishing the grossest idolatry in Israel. EXPOSITION THE "title" attributes this psalm to Solomon, and the contents of the psalm are very favourable to his authorship. The prayer in Psalms 72:1 is an echo of that recorded in 1 Kings 3:9. This is a Psalm which relates to the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, not as the Man of sorrows, but as the King of glory; not as David, struggling to secure the throne; but as Solomon, seated upon it, and reigning in peace. Psalms 72:1. _Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son._ Our Lord Jesus Christ is both a King and the Son of a King. He is King of kings, and therefore our Sovereign by his own native right; but he is also our sovereign Prince as the Son of God. Oh, that the Lord would visibly give into his hands power over all the people of the earth! «Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son.» Psalms 72:2. _He shall judge thy people with righteousness and thy poor with judgment._ I
