18-20 We are taught to bless God in Christ, for all he has done for us by him. David is earnest in prayer for the fulfilment of this prophecy and promise. It is sad to think how empty the earth is of the glory of God, how little service and honour he has from a world to which he is so bountiful. May we, like David, submit to Christ's authority, and partake of his righteousness and peace. May we bless him for the wonders of redeeming love. May we spend our days, and end our lives, praying for the spread of his gospel...

Verse Psalms 72:19. _LET THE WHOLE EARTH BE FILLED_ WITH _HIS GLORY_] Let the Gospel-the light, the Spirit, and power of Christ, fill the world. _AMEN_] So _let_ it be. _AND AMEN._] So it _shall be_. Hallelujah!...

AND BLESSED BE HIS GLORIOUS NAME FOR EVER - The name by which he is known - referring perhaps particularly to his name “Yahweh.” Still the prayer would be, that all the names by which he is known, all by which he has revealed himself, might be regarded with veneration always and everywhere. AND LET THE WHOLE EARTH BE FILLED WITH HIS GLORY - With the knowledge of himself; with the manifestations of his presence; with the influences of his religion. Compare Numbers 14:21. This prayer was especially appropriate at the close of a psalm designed to celebrate the glorious reign of the Messiah. Under that reign the earth will be, in fact, filled with the glory of God; the world will be a world of glory. Assuredly all who love God, and who love mankind, all who desire that God may be honored, and that the world may be blessed

EXPOSITION THE "title" attributes this psalm to Solomon, and the contents of the psalm are very favourable to his authorship. The prayer in Psalms 72:1 is an echo of that recorded in 1 Kings 3:9. The stress laid upon "peace" (1 Kings 3:3, 1 Kings 3:7) accords with the peaceful reign (1 Kings 4:20-11) of "the peaceful one." The local allusions (1 Kings 3:10, 1 Kin

Every name of Christ is glorious in itself, and precious to his people; "like ointment poured forth", as his name Messiah, to which the allusion is in Song of Solomon 1:3; his name Immanuel, God with us, Isaiah 7:14; Jehovah our righteousness, Jeremiah 23:6; Jesus a Saviour; as well as what belongs to his royal dignity, King of kings, and Lord of lords; a name above every name that is named in this world, or that to come; AND LET THE WHOLE EARTH [BE] FILLED WITH HIS GLORY; as it will be, when his kingdom shall be from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth; when the little stone cut out without hands shall become a great mountain,

This is a Psalm which relates to the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, not as the Man of sorrows, but as the King of glory; not as David, struggling to secure the throne; but as Solomon, seated upon it, and reigning in peace. Psalms 72:1. _Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son._ Our Lord Jesus Christ is both a King and the Son of a King. He is King of kings, and therefore our Sovereign by his own native right; but he is also our sovereign Prince as the Son of God. Oh, that the Lord would visibly give into his hands power over all the people of the earth! «Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son.» Psalms 72:2. _He shall judge thy people with righteousness and thy poor with judgment._ I

Surely the Spirit of God directed the arrangement of the Psalms, and put each into the right place. Here we have a beautiful prophecy of what is yet to be and for which all is waiting now, in a time when every form of government has failed and law and order seems to go to pieces. This doxology is no part of the Psalm, but marks the close of Book ii. It is fuller than the corresponding doxology at the end of Book i (Psalms 41:13), and those at the end of Books iii (Psalms 89:52) and iv (Psalms 106:48)....
