Psalms 75:5

I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn: -In reliance on God's promise (Psalms 75:2), Israel warns the haughty foe no more to lift up the neck in pride, for Israel's Helper, God, has a cup of wrath which her enemy must drink. Verse 4. I SAID UNTO THE FOOLS, DEAL NOT FOOLISHLY - Hebrew, laholedim tahollu, 'the insolent (vain glorious) ... insolently' (vain-gloriously) (Psalms 5:5, note; 73:3). Verse Psalms 75:5. _SPEAK_ NOT WITH _A STIFF NECK._] Mr. _Bruce_ has observed that the Abyssinian kings have a _horn_ on their _diadem_; and that the keeping it erect, or in a projecting form, makes them appear as if they had a _stiff neck_; and refers to this passage for the antiquity of the usage, and the _appearance_ also....

LIFT NOT UP YOUR HORN ON HIGH - In a proud, self-confident, arrogant manner. SPEAK NOT WITH A STIFF NECK - With arrogance and pride; in a haughty, imperious manner. The word rendered “stiff” (literally “a neck of stiffness”) - עתק _‛__âthâq_ - means properly bold, impudent, wicked; and the idea is that of speaking as those do who are impudent, shameless, bold, licentious - indicating confidence in themselves, and a reckless disregard of truth and of the rights of others. The Septuagint and the Vulgate render it, “And speak not unrighteousness against God.”...

EXPOSITION This is a hymn of praise in anticipation of a deliverance, which may be from Sennacherib, or from some other dangerous enemy. The actual praise is confined to the first and the last two verses. The remainder of the poem (Psalms 75:2) sets forth God as a righteous Judge, against whom the ungodly contend in vain, and who will pour out at last the dregs of his vengeance upon them. The author may be Asaph, and the deliverance that from Zerah (2 Chronicles 14:9); or the date may be later, and the writer an Asaphite Levite of the time of Jehoshaphat or Hezekiah. The phrase, "Al-taschith," in the "title," is probably a musical term. It occurs also in the titles of Psalms 57:1;...

Psalms 75 The Divine Answer _ 1. Christ the righteous judge (Psalms 75:1)_ 2. His judgment (Psalms 75:6) It is Christ as King who is pictured in this Psalm coming to answer the pleas of His people in behalf of His sanctuary. The translation in our version of the opening verses is faulty. “We give thanks to Thee, O God, we give thanks--Thy Name is near! When I have taken the set time, I, even I, will judge uprightly. Though the earth and all the inhabitants thereof are melting, I myself set up its pillars.” Then He executes His judgments. He deals with the wicked, the horn lifted up, the man of sin. LXXV. THE INEVITABLE JUDGMENT. The Ps. opens with praise of God and His wondrous works. After Psalms 75:1 it is God who speaks. A warning to all presumptuous braggarts, based on the Divine utterances of Psalms 75:2. It is disputed whether the speaker is still God, as in Psalms 75:2, or the poet, but the latter alternative is preferable. The interposition of _Selah_marks the end of the Divine speech, and _I said_naturally introduces a fresh speaker. Moreover there is no break between Psalms 75:5 and Psalms 75:6, but it is clear that God is no longer speaking in Psalms 75:6....
