Thou feedest them with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in great measure. THOU FEEDEST THEM WITH THE BREAD OF TEARS - making tears their bread (). AND GIVEST THEM TEARS TO DRINK IN GREAT MEASURE - rather, as the parallelism requires 'thou makest them to drink out of a measure (i:e., containing) tears' The "measure" was one for measuring liquids, the third (as the Hebrew means) of a larger measure. A sad contrast to the ordinary treatment which the "Shepherd of Israel" gives to His flock (), "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies ... my cup runneth over." Now, tears are Israel's both meat and drink....

5_Thou hast fed us with bread of tears, etc. _By these forms of expression, they depict the greatness of their grief, and the long continuance of their calamities; as if they had said, We are so filled with sorrow, that we can contain no more. (388) They add, in the following verse that _they were made a strife to their neighbors _This admits of being explained in two ways. It means either that their neighbors had taken up a quarrel against them; or that, having obtained the victory over them, they were contending about the spoil, as is usually the case in such circumstances, each being eager to drag it to himself. The former interpretation, however seems to be the more suitable. The people complain that, whereas neighborhood ought to be a bond of mutual goodwill, they had as many enemies as neighbors. 1-7 He that dwelleth upon the mercy-seat, is the good Shepherd of his people. But we can neither expect the comfort of his love, nor the protection of his arm, unless we partake of his converting grace. If he is really angry at the prayers of his people, it is because, although they pray, their ends are not right, or there is some secret sin indulged in them, or he will try their patience and perseverance in prayer. When God is displeased with his people, we must expect to see them in tears, and their enemies in triumph. There is no salvation but from God's favour; there is no conversion to God but by his own grace....

Verse Psalms 80:5. _THOU FEEDEST THEM WITH THE BREAD OF TEARS_] They have no peace, no comfort, nothing but continual sorrow. _IN GREAT MEASURE._] שליש _shalish, threefold_. Some think it was a certain _measure_ used by the Chaldeans, the real capacity of which is not known. others think it signifies _abundance_ or _abundantly_....

THOU FEEDEST THEM WITH THE BREAD OF TEARS - literally, “Thou causest them to eat the bread of tears,” or of weeping. That is, their food was accompanied with tears; even when they ate, they wept. Their tears seemed to moisten their bread, they flowed so copiously. See the notes at Psalms 42:3. AND GIVEST THEM TEARS TO DRINK - So abundant were their tears that they might constitute their very drink. IN GREAT MEASURE - Or rather by measure; that is, abundantly. The word here rendered “great measure” - שׁלישׁ _shâlı̂ysh_ - means properly a third, and is usually applied to a measure for grain - a third part of another measure - as, the third part of an ephah. EXPOSITION A PSALM in which the writer entreats God to restore his favour once more to Israel, and especially to the ten tribes, who are in affliction, and in danger of perishing (Psalms 80:1, Psalms 80:2, Psalms 80:15). Psalms 80:1. _Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth. Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us. Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved._ To whom could Israel go, in times of distress, but unto her God?
