Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them. -Second part of the First strophe. 7_They will go from strength to strength. _In this verse the same sentiment is repeated. Mount Zion being the place where, according to the appointment of the law, the holy assemblies were observed, after the ark of the covenant was removed thither, it is said, that the people of God will come to Zion in great numbers, provoking one another to this good work. (467) The word חיל, _chayil, _seldom signifies _a troop, _or _band of men, _but most commonly _power, _or _strength. _It will therefore be more in accordance with the ordinary use of the term, to translate, _They will go from strength to strength; _(468) implying, that the saints are continually acquiring fresh strength for going up to mount Zion, and continue to prosecute their journey without weariness or fatigue, until they reach the wished-for place, a

1-7 The ordinances of God are the believer's solace in this evil world; in them he enjoys the presence of the living God: this causes him to regret his absence from them. They are to his soul as the nest to the bird. Yet they are only an earnest of the happiness of heaven; but how can men desire to enter that holy habitation, who complain of Divine ordinances as wearisome? Those are truly happy, who go forth, and go on in the exercise of religion, in the strength of the grace of Jesus Christ, from whom all our sufficiency is. The pilgrims to the heavenly city may have to pass through many a valley of weeping, and many a thirsty desert; but wells of salvation shall be opened for them, and consolations sent for their support. Verse Psalms 84:7. _THEY GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH_] They proceed from one degree of grace to another, gaining Divine virtue through all the steps of their probation. EVERY ONE OF THEM _IN ZION APPEARETH BEFORE GOD._] This is a paraphrase, and a bad one, but no translation. They shall proceed from strength to strength, יראה אל אלהים בציון _yeraeh el Elohim_ _betsiyon_, "The God of gods shall be seen in Zion." God shall appear in their behalf, as often as they shall seek him; in consequence of which they shall increase in spiritual strength. Some think there is a reference here to _companies_ of people going up to Jerusalem from different parts of the land, blending together as they go on, so that the crowd is continually increasing. This meaning our translators have put in the _margin_....

EXPOSITION This psalm, attributed (see title) to the "sons of Korah," or the Korahite Levites (see 1 Chronicles 26:1; 2 Chronicles 20:19), describes the blessedness of their position as dwellers in the house of God, and keepers of its thresholds. LXXXIV. A PILGRIM PSALM. Psalms 84:3. sparrow (rather little bird generally) and SWALLOW are metaphorical for pious Jewish pilgrims. As the birds find their nests and homes, so the Jew, worthy of the name, finds his rest and joy in proximity to the altars of his God. Altars may be a poetical plural, like holy places in Psalms 68:35 (_cf._ especially Psalms 132:5; Psalms 132:7). To take the words as if they meant that the birds in the literal sense found a home at the altar would involve manifest absurdity.
