Wilt thou shew wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah. -Appeal to God's regard to His own honour as involved in delivering the suppliant; because it is to the living that God shows His wonders, and it is from the living that God receives praises with the perfect powers of the entire man, body and soul united. 'Death is here contemplated as it is in itself apart from anything to mitigate or counteract its terrors-what it would be had redemption not been; what it was to the Redeemer's soul (DeBurgh). 10-18 Departed souls may declare God's faithfulness, justice, and lovingkindness; but deceased bodies can neither receive God's favours in comfort, nor return them in praise. The psalmist resolved to continue in prayer, and the more so, because deliverance did not come speedily. Though our prayers are not soon answered, yet we must not give over praying. The greater our troubles, the more earnest and serious we should be in prayer. SHALL THY WONDERS BE KNOWN IN THE DARK? - In the dark world; in “the land of darkness and the shadow of death; a land of darkness, as darkness itself, and where the light is as darkness.” Job 10:21. “And thy righteousness.” The justice of thy character; or, the ways in which thou dost maintain and manifest thy righteous character. IN THE LAND OF FORGETFULNESS - Of oblivion; where the memory has decayed, and where the remembrance of former things is blotted out. This is a part of the general description, illustrating the ideas then entertained of the state of the dead; that they would be weak and feeble; that they could see nothing; that even the memory would fail, and the recollection of former things pass from the mind. LXXXVIII. A LEPER'S PRAYER. This Ps. has striking peculiarities. The suffering here portrayed has been long and terrible. The Psalmist has been tormented by sickness from his youth (Psalms 88:15). Yahweh has put lover and friend away from him. This seclusion was, no doubt, due to leprosy, which was a living death, separating a man from his dearest. The malady was supposed to come directly from God: it was His stroke _par excellence._ The Psalmist mentions no enemies, he confesses no sin, he pleads no merits. Nor does he draw comfort from the thought of an afterlife. On the contrary, he shares the common belief in Sheol (Psalms 88:10).
