_FOR THE NEEDY SHALL NOT ALWAY BE FORGOTTEN: THE EXPECTATION OF THE POOR SHALL NOT PERISH FOR EVER._ For the needy shall not alway be forgotten - whereas the wicked shall be put out of remembrance "forever and ever" (Psalms 9:5; Psalms 9:17). The needy righteous, though now seemingly overlooked in respect to temporal prosperity, shall not 'always' be so....

18._For the poor shall not always be forgotten. _The assertion that God will not forsake the poor and afflicted for ever, is a confirmation of the preceding sentence. By it he intimates, that they may indeed seem to be forsaken for a time. Let us, therefore, remember that God has promised his assistance to us, not in the way of preventing our afflictions, but of at length succouring us after we have been long subdued under the cross. David speaks expressly of _hope _or _expectation, _thereby to encourage us to prayer. FOR THE NEEDY - The poor; those who are dependent and helpless. SHALL NOT ALWAYS BE FORGOTTEN - That is, by God. He will interfere and save them by destroying their enemies. He will not suffer the wicked always to persecute and oppress the righteous. In due time he will vindicate his own cause; will deliver the oppressed and down-trodden, and will consign their oppressors to deserved punishment. This is as true now, in regard to all the oppressed and their oppressors, as it was in the time of the psalmist. THE EXPECTATION OF THE POOR - Of the afflicted and the oppressed. The word “expectation” refers to their hope; their desire; their earnest looking for deliverance. In that state men naturally look for the divine interposition, and the psalmist says that in that they will not always be disappointed. Shall not perish for

EXPOSITION This psalm, which, like the six preceding it, is declared by the title to be "a Psalm of David," is a song of thanksgiving for the defeat of some foreign enemy. It is the first of what are called "the alphabetic psalms;" but the law of alphabetic order is applied in it somewhat loosely and irregularly. All the four lines of the first stanza commence with _aleph_;_ _but after this it is only the first line of each stanza that observes the law. And even this amount of observance is neglected in the last stanza. The poem is one of the most regular in its structure of all the psalms, consisting as it does of ten equal strophes of four lines each. This Psalm has a dedication which is very difficult to understand: «To the chief Musician upon Muthlabben. A Psalm of David.» Either «Muthlabben» is the tune to which the Psalm was to be sung, or some musical instrument that is now forgotten, or else it alludes to Ben, who was one of the Levitical singers mentioned in 1 Chronicles 15:18. In all probability, however, the true translation of the title is, «A Psalm on the death of the son,» or «on the death of the champion,» and it is thought by some that it was composed by David after the death of giant Goliath. If it be so, I think you will see, as we read the Psalm, that it well proclaims the victory which God had wrought.
