Psalms 98:9

Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. -As in the preceding strophe the intensity of the joy at the Lord's coming is set forth, so in this strophe its extent. All the world and its inhabitants are to be joyful together. Verse 7. LET THE SEA ROAR, AND THE FULLNESS THEREOF - (, end.) 4-9 Let all the children of men rejoice in the setting up the kingdom of Christ, for all may benefit by it. The different orders of rational creatures in the universe, seem to be described in figurative language in the reign of the great Messiah. The kingdom of Christ will be a blessing to the whole creation. We expect his second coming to begin his glorious reign. Then shall heaven and earth rejoice, and the joy of the redeemed shall be full. But sin and its dreadful effects will not be utterly done away, till the Lord come to judge the world in righteousness. Seeing then that we look for such things, let us give diligence that we may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless...

Verse Psalms 98:9. _FOR HE COMETH TO JUDGE THE EARTH_] He comes to make known his salvation, and show his merciful designs to all the children of men. _WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS SHALL HE JUDGE THE WORLD_] His word shall not be confined; all shall know him, from the least to the greatest: he shall show that he is loving to every man, and hateth nothing that he hath made. See the notes on Psalms 96:10. There is a very great similarity between this Psalm and the Song or _Magnificat_ of the Blessed Virgin. I shall note some of the parallels, chiefly from Bishop Nicholson. This Psalm is an evident prophecy of Christ's coming to save the world; and what is here _foretold_ by David is, in the Blessed _Virgin's_ song, chanted forth as being accomplished

BEFORE THE LORD, FOR HE COMETH TO JUDGE THE EARTH ... - This verse is essentially the same as Psalms 96:13. See the notes at that verse. The psalm calls for universal praise. The very “reading” of the psalm - so joyous - so jubilant - so animated - so exulting - is suited to awaken the mind to praise; to rouse it to thankfulness; to fill it with joy. One cannot read the psalm without being a happier man; without being lifted above the world; without lofty views of God; without a feeling that he is worthy of this universal praise; without recognizing that we are in a world where the mind should be joyful; that we are under the dominion of a God whose reign should fill the mind with gladness....

EXPOSITION ANOTHER psalm of joy on the coming of God to judge the earth (Psalms 98:9). It is entitled simply "a psalm," and has no very peculiar features. Metrically, it is best viewed as composed of three strophes of three verses each. The first strophe gives the grounds of praise (Psalms 98:1); the next describes the method of praise (Psalms 98:4); the third contains a call on all nature to join in the praise (Psalms 98:7). Psalms 96:13, WITH RIGHTEOUSNESS SHALL HE JUDGE THE WORLD, AND THE PEOPLE WITH EQUITY; both at his first and second coming, and during the intermediate time; see the note as before. The only difference is, that in Psalms 96:13, it is said that he shall judge the people "with his truth", here "with equity", or "uprightnesses" f; in the most upright manner, according to the strictest rules of justice and judgment; see Isaiah 11:3. f במשרים "in rectitudinibus", Montanus, Michaelis....

He has brought salvation and victory; He has made known His salvation, His righteousness in judgment was seen by the nations. XCVIII. A PSALM OF GRATEFUL JOY. The poet calls all nations and all mankind to rejoice, because Yahweh has manifested His righteousness. Here, as in Psalms 98:2 Is., righteousness means Yahweh's vindication of Israel's rights (see Psalms 103:6; Isaiah 45:24). It is almost equivalent to the grace which Yahweh shows to Israel.
