And he said unto me, Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings. HE SAID. A B 'Aleph ('), Vulgate, read, 'they say unto me:' indefinite for 'it was said unto me.' THOU MUST - as the servant of God, bound to prophesy at His command. AGAIN - as thou didst already in the previous part of this book. BEFORE - rather [ epi (G1909) laois (G2992)], 'concerning many peoples,' in their relation to the Church. The eating of the book, as in Ezekiel's case, marks John's inauguration to a fresh stage in his prophetic office-namely, revealing the things which befall the holy city and the Church of God-the subject of the rest of the book....

8-11 Most men feel pleasure in looking into future events, and all good men like to receive a word from God. But when this book of prophecy was thoroughly digested by the apostle, the contents would be bitter; there were things so awful and terrible, such grievous persecutions of the people of God, such desolations in the earth, that the foresight and foreknowledge of them would be painful to his mind. Let us seek to be taught by Christ, and to obey his orders; daily meditating on his word, that it may nourish our souls; and then declaring it according to our several stations. The sweetness of such contemplations will often be mingled with bitterness, while we compare the Scriptures with the state of the world and the church, or even with that of our own hearts....

Verse Revelation 10:11. _THOU MUST PROPHESY AGAIN_] Thou must write, not only for the instruction of the Jews in Palestine, but of those in the different provinces, as well as the heathens and heathen emperors and potentates in general. THE reader will find, on comparing this chapter with Daniel 8:1; Daniel 12:1, and Ezekiel 2:1, that there are several things similar in both; and the writer of the Apocalypse appears to keep these two prophets continually in view. AND HE SAID UNTO ME - The angel then said. THOU MUST PROPHESY - The word “prophesy” here is evidently used in the large sense of making known divine truth in general; not in the comparatively narrow and limited sense in which it is commonly used, as referring merely to the foretelling of future events. See the word explained in the Romans 12:6 note; 1 Corinthians 14:1 note. The meaning is, that, as a consequence of becoming possessed of the little volume and its contents, he would be called to proclaim divine truth, or to make the message of God known to mankind. The direct address is to John himself; but it is evidently not to be understood of him personally. He is represented as seeing the angel; as hearkening to his voice;

EXPOSITION REVELATION 10:1 AND I SAW. We have here the commencement of what many writers call an episode, or rather two episodes, which intervene between the sixth and seventh trumpets, just as Revelation 7:1. occurs between the sixth and seventh seals. But as in the latter place we saw only a greater elaboration in the introduction to the seventh seal, and not a detached relation, so here Revelation 10:1. and Revelation 11:1 form a gradual transition from the sixth to the seventh trumpet, and supplement what is set forth under those trumpets. CHAPTER 10 Revelation 10:1 . The proclamation of the mighty angel is the first recorded event in this parenthesis. Who is this angel? It is Christ Himself. We saw our Lord in angel's form before the opening of the seventh seal and then He appeared in priestly dignity. Here before the sounding of the seventh trumpet He appears again in the same form, but He is called a mighty angel and we behold Him in royal dignity. The cloud, the rainbow, the face like the sun, His right foot upon the sea, the left on the earth, the voice like a lion and the seven thunders, all declare this to be correct. The hour is rapidly approaching when the kingdoms of this earth are to become His kingdom. This is seen under the seventh trumpet. And, therefore, He is seen now in this attitude of royal dignity. THE VISION OF THE STRONG ANGEL AND THE LITTLE BOOK. Revelation 10:1. The strong angel. We have no means of identifying this angel. To suppose that he represents Christ is contrary to all analogy and precedent. COMING DOWN OUT OF HEAVEN: the scene of the previous visions is laid in heaven, whither the seer had been transported. Here he seems to be standing upon the earth and watching the descent of the angel. Revelation 10:2. a little book: the Gr. word is an emphatic diminutive, a very small roll (or scroll). This book is supposed to contain a fragment of Divine revelation (_cf._ the book mentioned in Ezekiel 2:9)....

"And the voice which. heard from heaven spake unto me again, and said, Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth. And. went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.
