The essential idea in such an oath is an appeal to God; a solemn reference to Him as a witness; an utterance in the presence of Him who is acquainted with the truth or falsehood of what is said, and who will punish him who appeals to him falsely. It is usual, in such an oath, in order to give to it greater solemnity, to refer to some attribute of God, or something in the divine character on which the mind would rest at the time, as tending to make it more impressive. Thus, in the passage before us, the reference is to God as “ever-living”; that is, he is now a witness, and he ever will be; he has now the power to detect and punish, and he ever will have the same power. CHAPTER 10 Revelation 10:1 . The proclamation of the mighty angel is the first recorded event in this parenthesis. Who is this angel? It is Christ Himself. We saw our Lord in angel's form before the opening of the seventh seal and then He appeared in priestly dignity. Here before the sounding of the seventh trumpet He appears again in the same form, but He is called a mighty angel and we behold Him in royal dignity. The cloud, the rainbow, the face like the sun, His right foot upon the sea, the left on the earth, the voice like a lion and the seven thunders, all declare this to be correct. THE VISION OF THE STRONG ANGEL AND THE LITTLE BOOK. Revelation 10:1. The strong angel. We have no means of identifying this angel. To suppose that he represents Christ is contrary to all analogy and precedent. COMING DOWN OUT OF HEAVEN: the scene of the previous visions is laid in heaven, whither the seer had been transported. Here he seems to be standing upon the earth and watching the descent of the angel. Revelation 10:2. a little book: the Gr. word is an emphatic diminutive, a very small roll (or scroll). This book is supposed to contain a fragment of Divine revelation (_cf._ the book mentioned in Ezekiel 2:9)....
