Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. HERE ... Resumed from Revelation 13:10 (note). In the fiery persecution which awaits all who will not worship the beast, the faith and patience of the followers of God and Jesus shall be proved. 6-13 The progress of the Reformation appears to be here set forth. The four proclamations are plain in their meaning; that all Christians may be encouraged, in the time of trial, to be faithful to their Lord. The gospel is the great means whereby men are brought to fear God, and to give glory to him. The preaching of the everlasting gospel shakes the foundations of antichrist in the world, and hastens its downfal. If any persist in being subject to the beast, and in promoting his cause, they must expect to be for ever miserable in soul and body. The believer is to venture or suffer any thing in obeying the commandments of God, and professing the faith of Jesus. May God bestow this patience upon us. Verse Revelation 14:12. _HERE IS THE PATIENCE OF THE SAINTS_] Here the faith of the true Christians shall be proved; they _will_ follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth, they keep the commandments of God, and are steadfast in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ. Sometimes ηυπομονη, _patience_ or _perseverance_, is taken for the _reward_ of these virtues; the text therefore may be thus understood: Here is the reward of the perseverance of the true Christians; for although they die for the testimony of Jesus, yet they shall be unutterably blessed. HERE IS THE PATIENCE OF THE SAINTS - See the notes on Revelation 13:10. HERE ARE THEY THAT KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD - That is, in exercising such patience. Those who exercise that “patience” in these long-continued persecutions and trials, will show that they belong to those who keep the commandments of God, and are his true children. Or perhaps the meaning may be, “Here is a disclosure respecting the final destiny of these persecutors, which is adapted to comfort and sustain the saints in the trials which they will endure; an encouragement to constancy in obeying the commands of God, and in evincing the meek faith of the gospel.” AND THE FAITH OF JESUS - To encourage persevering faith in the Saviour. THE VISION OF THE THREE ANGELS. Revelation 14:6. an eternal gospel: it is doubtful whether gospel is here used in its technical sense. It probably means a proclamation of good news. The proclamation here is one which urges men to fear and worship God in view of the coming judgment (_cf._ Mark 1:15). Revelation 14:8. Babylon: there can be no doubt that Babylon here means Rome.
