Salute Apelles approved in Christ. Salute them which are of Aristobulus' household. SALUTE APELLES APPROVED, [ ton (G3588) dokimon (G1384)] - 'the approved one,' IN CHRIST - or, as we should say, 'that tried Christian'-a noble commendation. SALUTE THEM WHICH ARE OF ARISTOBULUS' [HOUSEHOLD]. It would seem, from what is said of Narcissus in the following verse, that this Aristobulus himself had not been a Christian, but that the Christians of his household simply were meant; very possibly some of his slaves....

1-16 Paul recommends Phebe to the Christians at Rome. It becomes Christians to help one another in their affairs, especially strangers; we know not what help we may need ourselves. Paul asks help for one that had been helpful to many; he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Though the care of all the churches came upon him daily, yet he could remember many persons, and send salutations to each, with particular characters of them, and express concern for them. Lest any should feel themselves hurt, as if Paul had forgotten them, he sends his remembrances to the rest, as brethren and saints, though not named. He adds, in the close, a general salutation to them all, in the name of the churches of Christ....

Verse Romans 16:10. _APELLES, APPROVED IN CHRIST_] A man who, on different occasions, had given the highest proofs of the sincerity and depth of his religion. Some suppose that _Apelles_ was the same with _Apollos_: whoever he was, he had given every demonstration of being a genuine Christian. _OF ARISTOBULUS'_ household.] It is doubted whether this person was converted, as the apostle does not _salute_ him, but his _household_; or as the margin reads, _his friends_. He might have been a Roman of considerable distinction, who, though not converted himself, had Christians among his _servants_ or his _slaves_. But, whatever he was, it is likely that he was _dead_ at this time, and therefore those of his household only are referred to by the apostle....

In language, seven are Latin, one is Hebrew, the remainder Greek: Rome at this date swarmed with Greeks, and the Roman Church remained of Greek speech till the third century.
