Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? KNOW YE NOT, THAT SO MANY OF US AS WERE BAPTIZED INTO JESUS CHRIST - `Christ Jesus' it should be; for that is the reading not only of all the manuscripts, but even of the Received Text, and yet our version (as printed, at least) has "Jesus Christ." 3._Know ye not_, _etc. _What he intimated in the last verse — that Christ destroys sin in his people, he proves here by mentioning the effect of baptism, by which we are initiated into his faith; for it is beyond any question, that we put on Christ in baptism, and that we are baptized for this end — that we may be one with him. But Paul takes up another principle — that we are then really united to the body of Christ, when his death brings forth in us its fruit; yea, he teaches us, that this fellowship as to death is what is to be mainly regarded in baptism; for not washing alone is set forth in it, but also the putting to death and the dying of the old man. It is hence evident, that when we become partakers of the grace of Christ, immediately the efficacy of his death appears. 3-10 Baptism teaches the necessity of dying to sin, and being as it were buried from all ungodly and unholy pursuits, and of rising to walk with God in newness of life. Unholy professors may have had the outward sign of a death unto sin, and a new birth unto righteousness, but they never passed from the family of Satan to that of God. The corrupt nature, called the old man, because derived from our first father Adam, is crucified with Christ, in every true believer, by the grace derived from the cross. It is weakened and in a dying state, though it yet struggles for life, and even for victory. Verse Romans 6:3. _KNOW YE NOT_, c.] Every man who believes the Christian religion, and receives baptism as the proof that he believes it, and has taken up the profession of it, is bound thereby to a life of righteousness. _To be baptized into Christ_, is to receive the doctrine of Christ crucified, and to receive baptism as a proof of the genuineness of that faith, and the obligation to live according to its precepts. _BAPTIZED INTO HIS DEATH?_] That, as Jesus Christ in his crucifixion died completely, so that no spark of the _natural_ or _animal life_ remained in his body, so those who profess his religion should be so completely _separated_ and _saved from sin_, that they have no more _connection_ with it, nor any more _influence_ from it, than a _dead man_ has with or from his _departed_ spirit....
