Verse Romans 8:13. _FOR IF YE LIVE AFTER THE FLESH, YE SHALL DIE_] Though μελλετε αποθνησκειν may mean, _ye shall afterwards die_, and this seems to indicate a _temporal_ death, yet not exclusively of an eternal death; for _both_, and especially the latter, are necessarily implied. _BUT IF YE THROUGH THE SPIRIT_] If ye seek that grace and spiritual help which the Gospel of Christ furnishes, resist, and, by resisting, _mortify the deeds of the flesh_, against which the law gave you no assistance, _ye shall live_ a life of _faith, love_, and _holy obedience_ here, and a life of _glory_ hereafter....

FOR IF YE LIVE AFTER THE FLESH, YE SHALL DIE,.... Such persons are dead, whilst they live, and shall die a second or an eternal death, if grace prevent not. It may be asked, whether one that has received the grace of God in truth, can live after the flesh; flesh, or corrupt nature, though still in such a person, has not the dominion over him: to live in sin, or in a continued course of sinning, is contrary to the grace of God; but flesh may prevail and greatly influence the life and conversation, for a while; how long this may be the case of a true believer, under backslidings, through the power of corruptions and temptations, cannot be known; but certain it is, that it shall not be always thus with him. It may be further inquired, whether such an one may be so left to live after the flesh, as to die and perish eternally; Christ expressly says, such shall not die that live and believe in...

This wonderful chapter is the very cream of the cream of Holy Scripture. What a grand key-note the apostle strikes in the first verse! Romans 8:1. _There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit._ «No condemnation» that is the first note of the chapter. In the last verse it is «no separation.» What glorious music there is here, no condemnation to those who are in Christ, no separation of them from Christ! Happy are the people who have a share in this double blessing, and unhappy are the men and women who know nothing of it. We will read it again: «There is therefore now no condemnation, «There is a great deal of accusation, and a great deal more of tribulation, but there is no condemnation not the least hint of it.
