5._Whose are the fathers, etc. _It is indeed of some importance to be descended from saints and men beloved of God, since God promised to the godly fathers mercy with regard to their children, even to thousand generations, and especially in the words addressed to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as we find in Genesis 17:4, and in other passages. It matters not, that this by itself, when separated from the fear of God and holiness of life, is vain and useless: for we find the same to have been the case as to _worship _and _glory, _as it is evident everywhere in the prophets, especially in Isaiah 1:11; Isaiah 60:1; and also in Jeremiah 7:4. Verse Romans 9:5. _WHOSE_ ARE _THE FATHERS_] Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, the twelve patriarchs, Moses, Joshua, Samuel, David, c., c., without controversy, the greatest and most eminent men that ever flourished under heaven. From these, is an uninterrupted and unpolluted line, the _Jewish people_ had descended and it was no small glory to be able to reckon, in their genealogy, persons of such incomparable merit and excellency. _AND OF WHOM, AS CONCERNING THE FLESH CHRIST_ CAME] These ancestors were the more renowned, as being the _progenitors_ of the _human nature_ of the MESSIAH.
