4-10 All the real excellence and holiness on earth centre in the church. Christ goes forth subduing his enemies, while his followers gain victories over the world, the flesh, and the devil. He shows the tenderness of a Redeemer, the delight he takes in his redeemed people, and the workings of his own grace in them. True believers alone can possess the beauty of holiness. And when their real character is known, it will be commended. Both the church and believers, at their first conversion, look forth as the morning, their light being small, but increasing. As to their sanctification, they are fair as the moon, deriving all their light, grace, and holiness from Christ; and as to justification, clear as the sun, clothed with Christ, the Sun of righteousness, and fighting the good fight of faith, under the banners of Christ, against all spiritual enemies....

Verse 10. _LOOKETH FORTH AS THE MORNING_] The bride is as lovely as the _dawn_ of day, the _Aurora_, or perhaps the _morning star_, VENUS. She is even more resplendent, she is as _beautiful as the_ MOON. She even surpasses _her_, for she is as _clear_ and _bright_ as the SUN; and _dangerous_ withal to look on, for she is as formidable as the vast collection of lights that burn by night at the head of every company in a numerous caravan. Song of Solomon 6:4. The comparison of a fine woman to the splendour of an unclouded _full_ _moon_ is continually recurring in the writings of the Asiatic poets....

The chorus address the bride here only as the Shulamite, and beg her to perform for their entertainment a sacred dance (see Song of Solomon 6:13) of her own country. The bride, after complying with their request, while they sing some stanzas in her praise Song of Solomon 7:1, and after receiving fresh commendations from the king Song of Solomon 7:6, invites him to return with her to her mother’s house Song of Solomon 7:11-8. Many Jewish allegorists interpret the whole as referring to the times of the second temple, and to the present dispersion of Israel

EXPOSITION SONG OF SOLOMON 6:1 WHITHER IS THY BELOVED GONE, O THOU FAIREST AMONG WOMEN? WHITHER HATH THY BELOVED TURNED HIM, THAT WE MAY SEEK HIM WITH THEE? The dialogue still continues, possibly because, as Delitzsch suggests, the effect of the dream which Shulamith narrates is not passed away in the morning. Under the influence of it she goes forth and meets the daughters of Jerusalem, who offer their assistance. But there is no necessity for this. The poetry merely demands that the idea of the dream should be still kept before the mind of the reader. The scene is still in the palace. The ladies playfully carry on the bride's cue, and help her to pour out her feelings. The bridegroom, they know, is near at hand, and is coming to delight himself in his bride; but the bride has not yet drawn him back completely to her side.

WHO IS SHE [THAT] LOOKETH FORTH AS THE MORNING?.... These words may be connected with the preceding, by a supplement of the word "saying"; and so may express what the daughters said, when they blessed and praised the church, wondering at her beauty, it being like the rising morning; so Helena is said to show her beautiful face, αως αντελλοισα, as the morning, when it springs forth n: there was a city in the tribe of Reuben, called Zarethshahar, the beauty or splendour of the morning, Joshua 13:19. Homer often describes the morning by her rosy fingers o, and as clothed with a saffron garment p, and as beautiful and divine q, and fair haired r; and as on a golden throne and beautiful s. CHAPTER 6 The description of Her Beloved was addressed to the daughters of Jerusalem. Their answer is recorded in the beginning of this chapter. Her outburst of praise, her glowing testimony of Him, created the desire in the hearts of others to become His. “Whither is thy Beloved gone? ... We will seek Him with thee.” The bride answers and then in words of precious assurance she declares, “I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine.” Then the Bridegroom speaks in loving praise of her. He speaks of that which she is for Him. He owns that remnant as “the only one” of her mother (the nation Israel). Nor is she alone His dove, but she is fair as the moon and clear as the sun; glory covers her and she is like an army with banners displayed. It is very difficult to explain, as they now stand, the relation of these verses to the context and each other. It is possible that Song of Solomon 6:10 is misplaced, and that it may have stood as an introduction to another song. The interpretation also of Song of Solomon 6:11 f. is unusually difficult. Song of Solomon 6:4-13. The King fascinated Here we have a renewed assault by Solomon. Just after the Shulammite's impassioned claim to belong wholly to her lover her royal persecutor returns, and bursts out into praise of her physical beauty as before, Song of Solomon 6:4. In Song of Solomon 6:10 he repeats the words used by the court ladies in praising her. In Song of Solomon 6:11 the Shulammite, ignoring Solomon, recalls what she was doing on the fatal day when she was so praised, and her attempt at flight from the court ladies....

WHO IS SHE THAT LOOKETH FORTH— _Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, dazzling as all the starry hosts?_ The gradation of images so naturally leads to the interpretation here given, that it seems impossible that the passage could have had any other meaning. A little attention to the original will abundantly shew the propriety of the meaning here assigned.
