And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:

Le Seigneur a dit - plutôt 'avait' dit à Moïse. La conférence détaillée dans ce chapitre doit être considérée comme ayant eu lieu avant l'intercession pathétique de Moïse enregistrée à la fin du chapitre précédent; et l'historien, ayant mentionné le fait de son inquiétude sincère et douloureuse, sous la pression écrasante dont il a répandu cette prière d'intercession pour ses compatriotes apostats, entre maintenant sur un compte rendu détaillé des circonstances.
