_AND SAY, THUS SAITH THE KING, PUT THIS FELLOW IN THE PRISON, AND FEED HIM WITH BREAD OF AFFLICTION AND WITH WATER OF AFFLICTION, UNTIL I COME IN PEACE._ Put this fellow in the prison. Ahab, under the impulse of vehement resentment, remands the prophet until his return. BREAD OF AFFLICTION ... WATER OF AFFLICTION - i:e., the poorest prison fare. Micaiah submitted, but reiterated aloud, in the presence of all the bystanders, that the issue of the war would be fatal to Ahab....

15-28 The greatest kindness we can do to one that is going in a dangerous way, is, to tell him of his danger. To leave the hardened criminal without excuse, and to give a useful lesson to others, Micaiah related his vision. This matter is represented after the manner of men: we are not to imagine that God is ever put upon new counsels; or that he needs to consult with angels, or any creature, about the methods he should take; or that he is the author of sin, or the cause of any man's telling or believing a lie. Micaiah returned not the blow of Zedekiah, yet, since he boasted of the Spirit, as those commonly do that know least of the Holy Spirit's operations, the true prophet left him to be convinced of his error by the event. Verse 27. _FEED HIM WITH BREAD OF AFFLICTION._] Deprive him of all the _conveniences_ and _comforts_ of life; treat him _severely_; just keep him alive, that he may see my triumph....

FEED HIM WITH BREAD OF AFFLICTION ... - Micaiah is to be once more put in prison, but, in order to punish him for his uncomplying spirit, upon a poorer and scantier diet than he had been previously allowed. This is to continue until Ahab returns in peace. Ahab introduces this expression purposely, in order to show his entire disbelief of Micaiah’s prophecy....

In the common prison of the city, where he had been before, as it seems; and might be now ordered into a more confined place in it, and what might be called "little ease": AND FEED HIM WITH BREAD OF AFFLICTION, AND WITH WATER OF AFFLICTION; with bad bread and foul water, and but little of either; just enough to keep alive, and to continue starving: UNTIL I COME IN PEACE; which he seemed confident of, and intimates that then he would punish him more severely, even with death, as a false prophet....

AHAB'S ATTACK ON RAMOTH-GILEAD AND HIS DEATH. The death of Ahab must have taken place before or during the year 854 B.C., when the battle of Qarqara was fought, and his name is mentioned in the Assyrian inscription (p. 69). The question is, did he take part in that battle as a vassal of Bir-' idri (Ben-hadad) before or after the war related in 20. In the latter case his death was probably later in 854 B.C.
