29-40 Ahab basely intended to betray Johoshaphat to danger, that he might secure himself. See what they get that join with wicked men. How can it be expected that he should be true to his friend, who has been false to his God! He had said in compliment to Ahab, I am as thou art, and now he was indeed taken for him. Those that associate with evil-doers, are in danger of sharing in their plagues. By Jehoshaphat's deliverance, God let him know, that though he was displeased with him, yet he had not deserted him. God is a friend that will not fail us when other friends do. Let no man think to hide himself from God's judgment. Verse 36. _EVERY MAN TO HIS CITY_] It appears that the Israelites and Jews maintained the fight the whole of the day; but when at evening the king died, and this was known, there was a proclamation made, probably with the consent of both Syrians and Israelites, that the war was over. Ahab being dead, his subjects did not choose to contend for Ramoth-gilead; so the Israelites went to their own _cities_, and the Syrians to their own _country_....

ABOUT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN - i. e. as soon as Ahab was dead. The abandonment of the expedition and dispersion of the army on the death of the king is thoroughly Oriental. The Septuagint version reads 1 Kings 22:36, “Every man to his city, and every man to his own country, for the king is dead: And they came to Samaria,” etc....

AND THERE WENT A PROCLAMATION THROUGHOUT THE HOST, ABOUT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN,.... Much about the time that Ahab died; and this proclamation by an herald might be made by his order, as he was dying, or by Jehoshaphat, when he understood he was dead: SAYING, EVERY MAN TO HIS CITY, AND EVERY MAN TO HIS OWN COUNTRY; the order was to cease fighting, and make the best of their way as fast as they could to their own homes, since their shepherd and master was dead, which fulfilled the vision of Micaiah, 1 Kings 22:17. It seems to have been a drawn battle, at least there is no account of the advantage on either side....

AHAB'S ATTACK ON RAMOTH-GILEAD AND HIS DEATH. The death of Ahab must have taken place before or during the year 854 B.C., when the battle of Qarqara was fought, and his name is mentioned in the Assyrian inscription (p. 69). The question is, did he take part in that battle as a vassal of Bir-' idri (Ben-hadad) before or after the war related in 20. In the latter case his death was probably later in 854 B.C. The chapter is a continuation of the latter case his 20, and from the same source with additions. Jehoshaphat, whose son married Ahab's daughter (2 Kings 8:18), is present as Ahab's ally. _And there went a proclamation_ R.V. A CRY. The word is often rendered -cry" and applied both to sorrowful and joyous utterances. Cf. Psalms 17:1; Psalms 30:5. Nowhere else is it rendered -proclamation." It indicates that word was passed round from troop to troop that some disaster made retreat necessary. The LXX. paraphrases -And the herald of the host at the setting of the sun stood and said," &c. _every man to his own country_ The R.V. omits -own", which has nothing to represent it in the original. The LXX. adds to the cry, -for the king is dead." But this is merely their version of the first words in 1 Kings 22:37. For they continue, -And they came to Samaria," &c....
