41-50 Jehoshaphat's reign appears to have been one of the best, both as to piety and prosperity. He pleased God, and God blessed him....

Verse 47. THERE WAS _NO KING IN EDOM_] It is plain that the compiler of this book lived after the days of Jehoshaphat, in whose time the Edomites revolted; see 2 Kings 8:22. David had conquered the Edomites, and they continued to be governed by _deputies_, appointed by the kings of Judah, till they recovered their liberty, as above. This note is introduced by the writer to account for Jehoshaphat's building ships at _Ezion-geber_, which was in the _territory_ of the _Edomites_, and which showed them to be at that time under the Jewish yoke....

In the time of Solomon, Hadad 1 Kings 11:14, according to the Septuagint, “reigned over Edom.” It appears by the present passage that the country had been again reduced either by Jehoshaphat, or by an earlier king, and was dependent on the kingdom of Judah, being governed by a “deputy” or viceroy, who, however, was allowed the royal title (compare 2 Kings 3:9, 2 Kings 3:12, 2 Kings 3:26). REIGNS OF JEHOSHAPHAT OF JUDAH AND AHAZIAH OF ISRAEL, These reigns are related in the usual annalistic style. 1 Kings 22:47, which says there was no king in Edom, is very obscure. It seems to imply that Jehoshaphat owned Edom, and ruled by his own nominee, but in 2 Kings 3 we read of a king of Edom. 1 Kings 22:48. On Ophir and Ezion-geber, see 1 Kings 9:26; 1 Kings 9:28. There was _then_[R.V. AND THERE WAS] _no king in Edom_ Therefore Jehoshaphat could go through Idumæa to the Red Sea and prepare him a fleet in Ezion-geber. On Ezion-geber and its position in the land of Edom, see above on 1 Kings 9:26. _a deputy_was _king_ What had become of the royal family of Edom, which Hadad (see 1 Kings 11:14 seqq.) appears to have established again, we are nowhere told. Nor is there anything to guide us to a conclusion by whom the deputy was appointed. It may be that Hadad had never gained much power after his return from Egypt, and his successor had not been able to maintain his position.
