THE KING'S MERCHANTS RECEIVED THE LINEN YARN AT A PRICE. It is strange to find these words in the midst of a context which is occupied before and after with describing the importation, on a large scale, of horses and chariots from Egypt. The insertion of a clause so unconnected might create a suspicion that the text in this passage has been dislocated, did not the words admit of another interpretation more in accordance with the tenor of the narrative. His riches and prosperity (2 Chronicles 1:13) The events connected with the beginning of Solomon's reign and recorded in 1 Kings 1-3:3 are omitted in Chronicles. Second Chronicles begins with the statement that Solomon was strengthened in his kingdom, and the Lord his God was with him, and magnified him exceedingly.

Egypt is an agricultural not a pastoral country; it lacks the broad plains suitable for the rearing of large numbers of horses. Egypt was therefore probably only the market; the raising ground was elsewhere. _and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price_ R.V. THE KING'S MERCHANTS RECEIVED THEM IN DROVES, EACH DROVE AT A PRICE. "Linen yarn" is a mistranslation of a word which perhaps means "drove." The whole verse refers to traffic in horses. According to a third view the Heb. "miḳvê" means neither "yarn" nor "drove," but conceals a proper name, known to us from Assyrian inscriptions, _Ku-i_or _Kuë_(Cilicia). In this case the horses would be brought in the first place from eastern Asia Minor and Armenia, since Cilicia itself is not a horse-breeding coun...

Moses had expressly prohibited the multiplying of horses, Deuteronomy 17:16 by which the future king was forbidden to establish a body of cavalry, because this could not be effected without sending into Egypt, with which people the Lord had forbidden any communication; as, of all foreign commerce, that was the most dangerous to true religion. When Solomon had violated this law, and multiplied horses to excess, (1 Kings 4:26.) it was soon attended with those fatal consequences which the law foretold: for, this wisest of kings having likewise, in violation of another law of Moses, married Pharaoh's daughter, (the early fruits of this commerce,) and the
