1-23 Those who trust God with their safety, must use proper means, else they tempt him. God will provide, but so must we also. Hezekiah gathered his people together, and spake comfortably to them. A believing confidence in God, will raise us above the prevailing fear of man. Let the good subjects and soldiers of Jesus Christ, rest upon his word, and boldly say, Since God is for us, who can be against us? By the favour of God, enemies are lost, and friends gained....

Verse 2 Chronicles 32:23. _MANY BROUGHT GIFTS UNTO THE LORD_] They plainly saw that Jehovah was the protector of the land. _AND PRESENTS TO HEZEKIAH_] They saw that God was his _friend_, and would undertake for him; and they did not wish to have such a man for their _enemy_....

EXPOSITION This chapter of thirty-three verses is paralleled by the sixty-one verses that begin with 2 Kings 18:13 and end with 2 Kings 19:37; and by Isaiah 36:1; Isaiah 37:1. Our chapter gives, as might be anticipated, but a very partial and somewhat broken account, therefore,_ _of this stretch of Hezekiah's career, and no adequate impression whatever of the great power of some portions of the parallel. A close comparison of the two places leaves us tolerably clear as to the order and consecutiveness of the history, although perhaps not entirely so. Even out of neighbouring nations, things which they devoted to the service of God in the temple, being convinced that this wonderful deliverance was wrought by the Lord God of Israel, and by him only: AND PRESENTS TO HEZEKIAH KING OF JUDAH; being desirous of living in friendship with him, who appeared to be the favourite of the God of heaven: SO THAT HE WAS MAGNIFIED IN THE SIGHT OF ALL NATIONS FROM THENCEFORTH; from the time of the destruction of the Assyrian army in such a wonderful manner, he was highly esteemed, and his name and fame spread abroad among all the neighbouring nations round about him....

Hezekiah began to reign when he was five and twenty years old; and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah 2.
