_BUT HEZEKIAH RENDERED NOT AGAIN ACCORDING TO THE BENEFIT DONE UNTO HIM; FOR HIS HEART WAS LIFTED UP: THEREFORE THERE WAS WRATH UPON HIM, AND UPON JUDAH AND JERUSALEM._ But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him. The conduct of Hezekiah in showing his armoury and treasure-house to the Babylonian ambassadors might seem a trivial offence if offence at all, and not rather an act of common civility to strangers who had come from a distant country, or of respect to the sovereign who sent them. But in judging of actions the divine eye is especially fixed on the intention (2 Chronicles 32:31). In this respect Hezekiak failed. Either he valued himself too much on account of the signal tokens of divine favour he had received, as if they had been merited by his righteous conduct; or trusted in his riches, as if they could have proved the means

What need have great men, and good men, and useful men, to study their own infirmities and follies, and their obligations to free grace, that they may never think highly of themselves; but beg earnestly of God, that he will always keep them humble! EXPOSITION This chapter of thirty-three verses is paralleled by the sixty-one verses that begin with 2 Kings 18:13 and end with 2 Kings 19:37; and by Isaiah 36:1; Isaiah 37:1. Our chapter gives, as might be anticipated, but a very partial and somewhat broken account, therefore,_ _of this stretch of Hezekiah's career, and no adequate impression whatever of the great power of some portions of the parallel.
