And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. AND THEY THAT WERE WITH ME SAW INDEED THE LIGHT, AND WERE AFRAID. _ The external evidence against this last clause is strong, but besides that there is nearly equal authority for it, internal evidence bespeaks it genuine; it being a favourite phrase of Luke, as Tischendorf notes-being used by him four times elsewhere, and only once by any other New Testament writer. Accordingly Tischendorf, who had excluded it in a former edition, restores it in his last one; and though Lachmann and Tregelles reject it, Meyer, DeWette, Lechler, and Alford pronounce in favour of it._ But they heard not the voice of him that spake to me....

Luke said there, that though Paul’s companions stood amazed, yet heard they a voice. − (502) But in this place he saith, they heard not the voice of him which spake to Paul though they saw the light. Surely it is no absurd thing to say that they heard some obscure voice; yet so that they did not discern it as Paul himself, whom alone Christ meant to stay and tame with the reprehension. Therefore, they hear a voice, because a sound doth enter into their ears, so that they know that some speaketh from heaven; they hear not the voice of him that spake to Paul, because they understand not what Christ saith. 1-11 The apostle addressed the enraged multitude, in the customary style of respect and good-will. Paul relates the history of his early life very particularly; he notices that his conversion was wholly the act of God. Condemned sinners are struck blind by the power of darkness, and it is a lasting blindness, like that of the unbelieving Jews. Convinced sinners are struck blind as Paul was, not by darkness, but by light. They are for a time brought to be at a loss within themselves, but it is in order to their being enlightened. A simple relation of the Lord's dealings with us, in bringing us, from opposing, to profess and promote his gospel, when delivered in a right spirit and manner, will sometimes make more impression that laboured speeches, even though it amounts not to the full proof of the truth, such as was shown in the change wrought in the apostle....

Thus e.g. the oration of Gorgias entitled, Υπὲρ Παλαμήδους ἀπολογία,_ _begins, Ἡ μὲν κατηγορία καὶ ἡ ἀπολογία κρίσις οὐ περὶ θανάτου γίγνεται. And Demosthenes opposes κατηγρσεῖν to accuse, to ἀπολογεῖσθαι, to make one's defense. And an ἀπολογία δικαία καὶ ἁπλῆ is to prove that τὰ κατηγορημένα, "the things of which the person is accused," were never done.
