Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. (HAVING BEEN) ROOTED (Ephesians 3:17). BUILT UP, [ epoikodomoumenoi (G2026)] - 'being builded up.' "Rooted" implies their vitality; 'builded up,' massive solidity. As in the Song of Solomon, image is added to image, to express varied aspects of divine truth. Thus 'walking,' a third image (Colossians 2:6), expresses the thought which "rooted" and "built," though each suggesting a thought special to itself, could not express-namely, onward motion. 7._And confirmed in the faith. _He now repeats without a figure the same thing that he had expressed by metaphors, — that the prosecution of the way, the support of the root, and of the foundation, is firmness and steadfastness of faith. And observe, that this argument is set before them in consequence of their having been well instructed, in order that they may safely and confidently secure their footing in the faith with which they had been made acquainted. _Abounding_. He would not have them simply remain immovable, but would have them grow every day more and more. When he adds, _with thanksgiving_, he would have them always keep in mind from what source faith itself proceeds, that they may not be puffed up with presumption, but may rather with fear repose themselves in the gift of God. 1-7 The soul prospers when we have clear knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus. When we not only believe with the heart, but are ready, when called, to make confession with the mouth. Knowledge and faith make a soul rich. The stronger our faith, and the warmer our love, the more will our comfort be. The treasures of wisdom are hid, not from us, but for us, in Christ. These were hid from proud unbelievers, but displayed in the person and redemption of Christ. See the danger of enticing words; how many are ruined by the false disguises and fair appearances of evil principles and wicked practices! Be aware and afraid of those who would entice to any evil; for they aim to spoil you. All Christians have, in profession at least, received Jesus Christ the Lord, consented to him, and taken him for theirs. We cannot be built up in Christ, or grow in him, unless we are first rooted in him, or...

Verse 7. _ROOTED AND BUILT UP IN HIM_] It is not usual with the apostle to employ this double metaphor, taken partly from the _growth of a tree_ and the _increase of a building_. They are to be _rooted_; as the good _seed_ had been already _sown_, it is to take root, and the roots are to spread far, wide, and deep. They are to be _grounded_; as the _foundation_ has already been _laid_, they are to _build_ thereon. In the one case, they are to bear much fruit; in the other, they are to grow up to be a habitation of God through the Spirit. See the notes on Ephesians 2:21; Ephesians 2:22; Ephesians 3:17. ROOTED ...IN HIM - As a tree strikes its roots deep in the earth, so our faith should strike deep into the doctrine respecting the Saviour. See the phrase used here explained in the parallel place in Ephesians 3:17. AND ESTABLISHED IN THE FAITH, AS YE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT - To wit, by the founders of the church, and by those faithful ministers who had succeeded them; Notes, Colossians 1:7.
