JOHN—NOTE ON John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. Another “I am” saying; see note on 6:35. In the OT, God is seen as the true shepherd (Psalms 23:1; Isaiah 40:11; Jeremiah 23:1; Ezekiel 34:1; Zechariah 11:4), and David (or the Davidic Messiah) is depicted as a good shepherd (2 Samuel 5:2; Psalms 78:70; Ezekiel 37:24; Micah 5:4), as is Moses (Psalms 77:20; Isaiah 63:11). Jesus, as both God and man, fulfills both of these themes. David literally risked his life for his sheep (1 Samuel 17:34), but Jesus surpassed David in that he gave his life on the cross for his sheep. See also John 10:15.
