Daniel 10:16

And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. ONE LIKE THE SIMILITUDE OF THE SONS OF MEN TOUCHED MY LIPS - the same significant action wherewith the Son of man accompanied His healing of the dumb (). He alone can give spiritual "utterance" (), enabling one to "open the mouth boldly:" so Isaiah 6:6. The same one who makes mute (), opens the mouth. Daniel here narrates how the angel who inflicted the wound at the same time brought the remedy. Though he had been cast down by fear, yet the touch of the angel raised him up, not because there was any virtue in the mere touch, but the use of symbols we know to be keenly encouraged by God, as we have previously observed. Thus the angel raised the Prophet not only by his voice but by his touch. Whence we gather the oppressive nature of the terror from the difficulty with which he was roused from it. This ought to be referred to its own end, which was to stamp the prophecy with the impress of authority, and openly to proclaim Daniel’s mission from God. We are aware, too, how Satan transforms himself into an angel of light, (2 Corinthians 11:14;) and hence God distinguishes this prediction, by fixed marks, from all the fallacies of Satan. 10-21 Whenever we enter into communion with God, it becomes us to have a due sense of the infinite distance between us and the holy God. How shall we, that are dust and ashes, speak to the Lord of glory? Nothing is more likely, nothing more effectual to revive the drooping spirits of the saints, than to be assured of God's love to them. From the very first day we begin to look toward God in a way of duty, he is ready to meet us in the way of mercy. Thus ready is God to hear prayer. When the angel had told the prophet of the things to come, he was to return, and oppose the decrees of the Persian kings against the Jews. Verse 16. _LIKE THE SIMILITUDE OF THE SONS OF MEN._] I think Gabriel is here meant, who appeared to Daniel in a _human form_; and so in Daniel 10:18, and see also Daniel 9:21. _TOUCHED MY LIPS_] Before this he was unable to speak. _BY THE VISION_] The vision that I have already had, and of which I have not a proper knowledge has greatly afflicted me, because I see it intimates grievous calamities to my people. AND, BEHOLD, ONE LIKE THE SIMILITUDE OF THE SONS OF MEN TOUCHED MY LIPS - In the form of a man. The reference here is undoubtedly to Gabriel appearing to Daniel in human form. Why he does not name him is unknown; nor is there any intimation whether he changed his form as he now approached the prophet. It would seem not improbable that, seeing the effect of his presence and his words on Daniel, he laid aside some of the manifestations of awe and majesty in which he had at first appeared to him, and approached him as a man, and placed his hands on his lips - as a sign that he should speak, or as imparting power to him to speak. CHAPTER 10 THE PREPARATION FOR THE FINAL PROPHECY This chapter contains the preface to the final great prophecies as found in the last two Chapter s of this book. The certain man who appeared unto Daniel at the banks of the river Hiddekel (Tigris) was the Lord. Compare with Revelation 1:1, where John, the beloved disciple, beheld Him in a vision of glory. Daniel's vision is a pre-incarnation vision of the same One whom John beheld after His resurrection and in His glorified humanity. The delayed answer by the angelic messenger is explained by the power of darkness. A powerful demon-prince, a satanic agency, having control over Persia, so that he claimed the title the prince of Persia, kept back the answer. Then the prophet was strengthened....

DANIEL 10. INTRODUCTION TO THE FINAL VISION. The last three Chapter s of Daniel form a unity and describe the final vision. Daniel 10 is introductory. A shining being appears to Daniel near the great river and tells him that he has been sent in answer to his prayers. The guardian angel of Persia had tried to intercept him, but Michael the protector of Israel had come to his assistance. DANIEL 10:1. THIRD YEAR OF CYRUS: 535 B.C, the latest date in the Book. Daniel 10:4. the great river: elsewhere (_cf. Genesis 15:18_) the Euphrates is described in this way, and as the Hiddekel, _i.e._ the Tigris, was 50 miles from Babylon, Charles thinks the name of the river is an interpolation....
