For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. The Greek order is, 'For the things done in secret by them it is a shame even to speak of.' The "for" gives his reason for 'not naming' (cf. ) in detail the works of darkness, whereas he describes definitely () 'the fruit of the light' (Bengel). I think the "for" expresses, Reprove them; for to speak of them in detail without reproving them is a shame (). Thus "works of darkness" answers to 'things done in secret.' And 'even to speak of them' without reproving is opposed to 'even reprove them.'...

12._Which are done by them in secret. _This shews the advantage of reproving the ungodly. If they do but escape the eyes of men, there is no crime, however shocking to be mentioned, which they will not perpetrate. To use a common proverb, “Night has no shame.” What is the reason of this? Sunk in the darkness of ignorance, they neither see their own baseness, nor think that it is seen by God and by angels. But let the torch of God’s word be brought forward, and their eyes are opened. Verse 12. _FOR IT IS A SHAME EVEN TO SPEAK_] This no doubt refers to the _Eleusinian_ and _Bacchanalian_ mysteries, which were performed in the night and darkness, and were known to be so impure and abominable, especially the _latter_, that the Roman senate banished them both from Rome and Italy.
