Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. THEREFORE, [ alla (G235)] - "But;" i:e., though the husband be not, as Christ, Saviour of the body (Ephesians 5:23), nevertheless, thus far they are one, that the 'subjection' or 'submission' (the same Greek as "submit," Ephesians 5:21) of the Church to Christ, is the prototype of that of the wife to the husband. 24._But, as the church is subject to Christ_. The particle _but, _may lead some to believe that the words, _he is the savior of the body, _are intended to anticipate an objection. Christ has, no doubt, this peculiar claim, that he is the Savior of the Church: nevertheless, let wives know, that their husbands, though they cannot produce equal claims, have authority over them, after the example of Christ. I prefer the former interpretation; for the argument derived from the word _but, _( ἀλλά,) does not appear to me to have much weight....

22-33 The duty of wives is, submission to their husbands in the Lord, which includes honouring and obeying them, from a principle of love to them. The duty of husbands is to love their wives. The love of Christ to the church is an example, which is sincere, pure, and constant, notwithstanding her failures. Christ gave himself for the church, that he might sanctify it in this world, and glorify it in the next, that he might bestow on all his members a principle of holiness, and deliver them from the guilt, the pollution, and the dominion of sin, by those influences of the Holy Spirit, of which baptismal water was the outward sign. The church and believers will not be without spot or wrinkle till they come to glory. But those only who are sanctified now, shall be glorified hereafter. Verse 24. _IN EVERY THING._] That is, every _lawful thing_; for it is not intimated that they should obey their husbands in any thing _criminal_, or in any thing detrimental to the _interests of their_ _souls_. The husband may be profligate, and may wish his wife to become such also; he may be an enemy to true religion, and use his authority to prevent his wife from those means of grace which she finds salutary to her soul; in _none_ of _these things_ should she obey him....

EPHESIANS 5:22 TO EPHESIANS 6:9. SUBORDINATION IN THE FEAR OF CHRIST. The principle is illustrated by the relation (_a)_ of wives to husbands, (_b)_ of children to parents, (_c_) of slaves to masters. The writer does not attack existing social institutions slavery, the _patria potestas,_ the dependent position of women. He accepts the relationships as they exist in the world he knows, and seeks to interpret them in the light of the gospel (p. 649).
