_AND IN THE MORNING, THEN YE SHALL SEE THE GLORY OF THE LORD; FOR THAT HE HEARETH YOUR MURMURINGS AGAINST THE LORD: AND WHAT ARE WE, THAT YE MURMUR AGAINST US?_ And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the Lord. This clause is in parallelism with the preceding one, the verbs "know" and "see" being frequently used synonymously; and both clauses refer to the practical demonstration of the divine agency and guidance of their movements, furnished by the miraculous provision they were to receive....

1-12 The provisions of Israel, brought from Egypt, were spent by the middle of the second month, and they murmured. It is no new thing for the greatest kindness to be basely represented as the greatest injuries. They so far undervalue their deliverance, that they wished they had died in Egypt; and by the hand of the Lord, that is, by the plagues which cut off the Egyptians. We cannot suppose they had plenty in Egypt, nor could they fear dying for want in the wilderness, while they had flocks and herds: none talk more absurdly than murmurers. Verse Exodus 16:7. _YE SHALL SEE THE GLORY OF THE LORD_] Does it not appear that the _glory of the Lord_ is here spoken of as something distinct from the Lord? for it is said HE (the glory) _heareth your_ _murmurings against the Lord_; though _the Lord_ may be here put for _himself_, the _antecedent_ instead of the _relative_. This passage may receive some light from Hebrews 1:3: _Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of_ _his person_, c. And as St. Paul's words are spoken of the Lord Jesus, is it not likely that the words of Moses refer to _him _ also? "No man hath seen God at any time" hence we may infer that Christ was the _visible_ agent in all the extraordinary and miraculous interferences which took place both in the patriarc...

EXPOSITION THE PROMISE OF BREAD FROM HEAVEN. When men who are in real distress make complaint, even though the tone of their complaint be not such as it ought to be, God in his mercy is wont to have compassion upon them, to "hear their mummurings," etc; and grant them some relief. But the relief is seldom of the kind which they expect, or pray for. The Israelites wished for actual bread, made of wheaten or barley flour. God gave them, not such bread, but a substitute for it. And first, before giving it, be promised that it should be given. Thus expectation was aroused; faith was exercised; the supernatural character of the relief was indicated; the power and the goodness of God, were, both of them, shown forth. And with the promise was given a law. They were on each occasion to gather no more than would suffice for the day. Thus they would continually "live by

Exodus 16:1. _And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt. AND IN THE MORNING. Bearing in mind the parallelism of the clauses, we obtain this meaning: That in the evening and in the morning the Israelites would perceive the glory of the Lord, who had brought them out of Egypt. "Seeing" is synonymous with "knowing." Seeing the glory of Jehovah did not consist in the sight of the glory of the Lord which appeared in the cloud, but in their perception or experience of that glory in the miraculous gift of flesh and bread (ver. 8, cf.
