23-30 A table was to be made of wood, overlaid with gold, to stand in the outer tabernacle, to be always furnished with the shew-bread. This table, with the articles on it, and its use, seems to typify the communion which the Lord holds with his redeemed people in his ordinances, the provisions of his house, the feasts they are favoured with. Also the food for their souls, which they always find when they hunger after it; and the delight he takes in their persons and services, as presented before him in Christ....

(Compare Exodus 37:10.) The table and the candlestick figured on the Arch of Titus at Rome are those of the Maccabaean times, but made as nearly as possible after the ancient models reproduced under the direction of Solomon and Zerubbabel. The details and size of the figure, and the description of Josephus, appear to agree very nearly with the directions here given to Moses, and to illustrate them in several particulars. Josephus says that the table was like the so-called Delphic tables, richly ornamented pieces of furniture in use amongst the Romans, which were sometimes, if not always, covered with gold or silver. EXPOSITION THE TABLE OF SHEW-BREAD. From the description of the ark, which constituted the sole furniture of the most holy place, God proceeded to describe the furniture of the holy place, or body of the tabernacle, which was to consist of three objects— 1. A table, called the table of shew-bread ("bread of presence" or "bread of setting-forth"). 2. A candelabrum, or lamp-stand; and 3. An altar for the offering of incense. Of these the table seems to have been regarded as of primary importance; and its description is therefore made to follow immediately on that of the ark. It was of acacia wood, overlaid with pure gold, and was of the most ordinary shape—oblong-square, _i.e; _with four legs, one at each corner. EXODUS 25:23 P. THE TABLE OF SHEWBREAD (_cf. Exodus 37:10_). It was an ancient custom to spread tables with food and drink as oblations to the gods, who were supposed to need food and drink (Leviticus 24:5 *). And the custom persisted long after men's ideas had changed, coming to be an acknowledgment of God's gift of daily bread. It may well typify the sympathetic share that the Creator and Preserver of all mankind takes in the creaturely needs and interests of His children. The table was of gilded wood, 3 × 1½ × 2¼ feet, with a gold rim or bead (Exodus 25:23 f.), strengthened by a 3-inch beaded frame round the legs ...

THOU SHALT ALSO MAKE A TABLE OF SHITTIM-WOOD— The next piece of furniture was the table for the _shewbread,_ Exodus 25:30 which, like the _ark,_ was to be made _of shittim-wood, overlaid with pure gold,_ with a _border_ and a _golden crown,_ or a circular rim of gold, with _rings_ and _staves,_ as for the ark; and, to furnish this table, _dishes, spoons, covers,_ and _bowls_ of _pure gold,_ were to be made, Exodus 25:29. Dr. Cudworth, in his Treatise on the Sacrament, ch. 6 speaks thus of this table and its furniture: "When God had brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, resolving to manifest himself in a peculiar manner present among them, he thought good to dwell amongst them in a visible and external manner; and therefore, while they were in the wilder
