_AND LOOK THAT THOU MAKE THEM AFTER THEIR PATTERN, WHICH WAS SHEWED THEE IN THE MOUNT._ Look that thou make them after their pattern. This caution, which is repeated with no small frequency in other parts of the narrative, is an evidence of the deep interest taken by the Divine King in the erection of His palace or sanctuary; and it is impossible to account for the circumstance of God's condescending to such minute details, except on the assumption that this tabernacle was to be of a typical character, and eminently subservient to the religious instruction and benefit of mankind, by shadowing forth, in its leading features, the grand truths of the Christian Church....

40_And look that thou make them. _He again inculcates, what we have already seen, that Moses should take care that all things were exactly modeled according to the original or pattern seen in the mount. But it is certain that it is not any mere vision which is here in question, but that the external ornaments of the sanctuary have _reference _to their spiritual object, as is plain from the explanation of Stephen and the Apostle. Wherefore we need not wonder that Zechariah should say that God would make manifest, and that by certain proof, under the reign of Christ, that it was no empty spectacle which God had set before His people under the Law....

31-40 The candlestick represents the light of God's word and Spirit, in and through Christ Jesus, afforded in this dark world to his believing people, to direct their worship and obedience, and to afford them consolations. The church is still dark, as the tabernacle was, in comparison with what it will be in heaven; but the word of God is a light shining in a dark place, 2 Peter 1:19, and a dark place indeed the world would be without it. Verse Exodus 25:40. _AND LOOK THAT THOU MAKE, C._] This verse should be understood as an order to Moses after the tabernacle, c., had been described to him as if he had said: "When thou comest to make all the things that I have already described to thee, with the other matters of which I shall afterwards treat, see that thou make every thing according to the pattern which thou didst see in the mount." EXPOSITION THE GOLDEN CANDLESTICK (Exodus 25:31-2). Though the holy of holies was always dark, unless when lighted by. the glory of God (Exodus 40:34, Exodus 40:35), the holy place, in which many of the priests' functions were to be performed, was to be always kept light. In the day-time sufficient light entered from the porch in front; but, as evening drew on, some artificial illumination was required. AND LOOK THAT THOU MAKE THEM,.... Or see that they are made by workmen employed: AFTER THEIR PATTERN, WHICH WAS SHOWED THEE IN THE MOUNT; from whence it appears, that as Moses was showed the model of the tabernacle, so also of the candlestick, and of all its appurtenances, and of every other vessel in it; and he is strictly charged to look carefully and diligently to it, that everything be done exactly according to the model he had a view of, in which everything was particularly described, and nothing was left to the will, humour, and fancy of men....

EXODUS 25:31 P. THE GOLDEN CANDLESTICK (or LAMPSTAND, _ cf. Exodus 37:17_ and Exodus 25:24). This was of massive gold, weighing 96 lbs., with its vessels (Exodus 25:40), having a base, a central stem, and six branches, all ornamented with bosses shaped like almond flowers, each cup or entire blossom being made up of the outer knop or calyx and the inner flower or corolla, three bosses on each branch and four on the central stem, as well as knops at the three points where the pairs of branches met the stem (Exodus 25:31).
